A one-act domestic drama about the spiral of self-doubt that follows us down the street. Whimsical, relatable, and mildly unhinged.

CAST:

You, an otherwise capable human being brought low by paranoia.

The Front Door, smug and unreadable.

The Keys, supporting role, crucial to the plot, uncooperative.

Your Brain, a chaotic neutral force.

The Street, the unforgiving stage upon which this drama unfolds.

SCENE ONE: THE DEPARTURE

You stand just outside your house. Bag slung over shoulder. Coat fastened. Face set with intent. You have places to be. Trains to catch. Schedules to honour.

With a satisfying click, the door closes behind you. You pat your pockets. Keys? Yes. Phone? Obviously. Wallet? Present and accounted for.

You walk down the street with confidence. You’re five steps away when it starts.

Your Brain:

“Did you lock the door?”

Of course you did. You remember doing it. You think. Probably. Didn’t you?

You slow your pace. One foot continues its stride while the other hesitates, like a man who’s suddenly remembered he’s left the oven on, the iron plugged in, and possibly a candle burning beside a curtain made of petrol-soaked crepe paper.

Your Brain (louder now):

“You didn’t check it. You just… walked away. Like a fool.”

You do a casual glance back at the house. Nothing amiss. The door looks closed. But you know that doesn’t mean anything. Doors can look closed and still be ever-so-slightly ajar. The breeze of chaos blows through gaps only your imagination can perceive.

SCENE TWO: THE TURNAROUND

Now eight paces from the house, you’ve fully stopped. You could keep walking, push through the doubt, trust your past self. But you don’t. Because—let’s be honest—your past self is a known liability. They’ve forgotten bags, birthdays, entire appointments. They can’t be trusted with security.

You turn around. Slowly. Casually. As if to the untrained eye, you’re simply admiring the local architecture. You rehearse your story in case anyone sees:

“Just had to pop back—left my… umbrella. Yes. Even though it’s July and I don’t own one.”

You return to the door. Stare it down. Grip the handle. Pull. Locked. Solid. No give. Not even a wobble. You nod, satisfied.

You step away again.

Your Brain:

“But did you really test it? Or did you just convince yourself you did?”

SCENE THREE: THE SECOND CHECK

You sigh, defeated. Return again. This time, with greater commitment. You jiggle the handle with excessive force, as though attempting to break in. You hope the neighbours aren’t watching. Or worse—they are, and this is the fifth time this month you’ve done this, and they now refer to you privately as “That One With The Lock Anxiety.”

You test it once more. You know it’s locked. You’ve felt it.

But now a deeper horror creeps in.

Your Brain:

“What if you locked it… but didn’t close it properly?”

You close your eyes. Breathe. This is madness. The door is closed. It must be closed. You clearly remember pushing it shut. The weight of it. The satisfying click. You know you did it.

Probably.

SCENE FOUR: THE Resolution (or Something Like It)

You walk away for the third time, muttering to yourself like a person who’s been slightly too long without social contact. This time, you don’t look back. You can’t. That way lies madness.

Still, twenty minutes later, on the bus, you will turn to your phone camera as a makeshift mirror and ask yourself, with the expression of a haunted Edwardian ghost:

“Did I check it properly? Or did I imagine checking it?”

The door is locked. Of course it is.

You’ll still think about it all day.

CURTAIN.

Encore performances available daily. Times vary. No ticket required. Mental peace not guaranteed.

Hailing originally from London, now living in the sleepy depths of Lincolnshire but claiming an allegiance to the absurd, Dwight has perfected the art of finding the surreal in real life. Whether it’s a spirited rant about the philosophical implications of queueing or a deep dive into why tea tastes better in a mug older than you, his blogs blur the line between the abstract and the everyday.

With an irreverent wit and a penchant for tangents that somehow come full circle, Dwight Warner doesn’t just write; he performs on the page. His humour is both sharp and delightfully nonsensical, like Monty Python met your nosiest neighbour and they decided to co-write a diary.

Known for being gregarious, Dwight is the life of any (real or metaphorical) party, whether he’s deconstructing the existential crisis of mismatched socks or sharing his inexplicable theories about why pigeons are secretly running the economy.

A larger-than-life personality with a laugh as loud as his opinions, Dwight Warner invites readers to step into a world where everything’s slightly askew—and that’s exactly how he likes it.

It begins, as all great tragedies do, with purpose. You rise from your chair, propelled by a very clear, specific mission—maybe you’re going to get your glasses, check the thermostat, or finally retrieve the laundry you’ve restarted three times. Your legs move with confidence. Your face is set with resolve. You stride purposefully across the house, open the door to the next room, and then…

Nothing.

Absolutely nothing. Your brain is suddenly quieter than a village pub at 10:59 on a Monday. The thought you had—a mere five seconds ago—is now gone. Wiped. Replaced by a gentle, buzzing static and a mild feeling of betrayal. You stand there, blinking, as if the room might hand you a clue. It doesn’t.

Welcome, dear reader, to the ancient and bewildering art of forgetting why you walked into the room.

The Silent Crisis of the Upright Wanderer

What’s worse is that it always feels important, doesn’t it? You’re convinced it was something urgent. Vital. Possibly even life-saving. Was it medication? Was it to warn someone of impending doom? Was it to stop the oven from exploding? Probably not. But in the absence of clarity, your mind will conjure up the most dramatic possible stakes.

And still, nothing comes. You wander the room like a low-budget ghost, hovering between the kettle and the fruit bowl, searching for answers in the bananas. You do a full 360 spin, just in case something jogs your memory, like a cupboard that shouts “Glasses! You came in here for your glasses!”

But cupboards, as we know, are cruel and silent things.

The Doorway Effect (or: Why You Can Blame Architecture)

There’s an actual scientific theory for this known as the Doorway Effect. Yes, scientists have studied this. Because apparently, at some point, someone walked into a room, forgot why, and thought, You know what? This needs a grant and a lab coat.

The theory suggests that walking through a doorway creates a mental boundary. Your brain, ever the over-efficient filing cabinet, goes “Right! New room, new thoughts!”—and unceremoniously tosses the old one in the bin.

It’s like your brain thinks you’ve entered a new level of a video game and it’s time to load fresh objectives. Unfortunately, the only objective is now “stand in place and question your life choices.”

So if anyone catches you staring blankly at the microwave, you can now reply, “Ah yes, just experiencing a cognitive event caused by architectural transitions.” That’ll shut them up.

The Three Stages of Memory Loss (Room-Based Edition)

Denial
“It’ll come to me in a second.”
Spoiler: it won’t.

Panic
“Oh no. This is how it starts. This is the beginning of the end.”
You Google symptoms. You are convinced you’ve developed at least six new conditions in the time it takes to walk across the landing.

Resignation
You either sit down and pretend it never happened, or you pick up a book and mutter, “Well, I meant to do this anyway.”
You become the master of accidental intention.

The Accidental Errand Spiral

Sometimes, you’ll try to compensate by doing something else in the room, as if the original reason might sneak back in through the side door.

You tidy a cushion. You rearrange a drawer. You sigh at a plant. Then you leave the room still having no idea what you were meant to do—but now with the added bonus of having started a completely new task.

This is how going to get a pair of scissors results in you hoovering the landing, cleaning out the fridge, alphabetising your spice rack, and never, ever finding the scissors.

The Moment of Sudden, Pointless Clarity

Of course, the cruelest part of this whole debacle is that the thought always returns. But it doesn’t return when you want it to. It waits.

Hours later, in bed, wrapped in a blanket burrito, drifting off to sleep—it hits. “Socks! I was going to find socks!”

It’s 11:42pm. You’re tired. You will not be finding socks now. The socks can wait. The thought, however, will now live rent-free in your head until morning, tapping on your brain like a needy pigeon.

Life Lessons from a Forgotten Thought

So what can we take from this deeply British rite of passage?

We could learn humility, for starters. No matter how intelligent, important, or caffeinated you are, you’re still at the mercy of your own synapses.

We could learn mindfulness. Maybe the room wanted us to stop, to pause, to reflect. To stand in silence and wonder what we’re doing with our lives (beyond looking for socks).

Or we could simply accept that the human brain, like a dodgy sat-nav, will occasionally reroute us for no reason other than sheer mischief.

And that’s fine.

Learn to Embrace the Blank

Forgetting why you walked into a room isn’t a personal failing. It’s a universal glitch. A sign that we’re busy, full of thoughts, and tragically reliant on a brain that occasionally decides to do a spontaneous reboot.

So next time it happens, don’t worry. Take a deep breath. Stare at the wall like it owes you money. And know that somewhere—possibly in the next room—there’s a thought looking for you just as hard as you’re looking for it.

And if all else fails, boil the kettle and grab a biscuit. Even if it wasn’t the reason you came in, it’s never a bad outcome.

There are many defining traits of human nature—love, ambition, the ability to queue with silent resentment—but none are quite as universal as our stubborn refusal to make two trips when carrying things. Whether it’s shopping bags, laundry baskets, or an entire Chinese takeaway order, we will strain, struggle, and risk permanent nerve damage just to avoid walking an extra ten feet.

It’s a mystery why we do this to ourselves. Is it laziness? Pride? A deep-seated need to prove we’re physically superior to our own past selves? Whatever the reason, the one-trip mentality is a battle we all fight—and usually lose.

The war against a second trip is fought in driveways, car parks, and stairwells all over the country. It’s a tale as old as time—person against gravity, willpower against common sense, pride against the inevitable snapping of a plastic carrier bag handle. Yet, no matter how many times we fail, no matter how many jars of pasta sauce shatter upon impact with the floor, we never learn.

The Psychology of the One-Trip Mentality

Why Do We Do This to Ourselves?

Let’s be honest: we could make two trips. Nothing is stopping us. But somehow, the idea of willingly going back for a second load feels like defeat. It’s as if our ancestors, who carried entire logs across prehistoric landscapes, would look down upon us for daring to make an extra journey to the car boot.

Then there’s the time-saving illusion. We convince ourselves that carrying all the bags at once will somehow shave minutes off our day. In reality, we spend an extra ten minutes contorting ourselves through doorways like a deranged octopus, hissing in pain as plastic bag handles cut deep into our fingers.

There’s also an element of competition—can I beat my personal best? If last week you managed eight bags in one go, this week you must push for ten. The challenge is relentless, the stakes higher with each passing attempt.

And then there’s social pressure. If anyone’s watching, there’s absolutely no way you’re making two trips. You will pick up all six bags, the multipack of toilet rolls, and the 24-pack of bottled water in one go, even if it means waddling to your front door like an overburdened pack mule.

The Science of the Struggle

The Bag Distribution Dilemma

A seasoned one-trip warrior knows that successful execution is all about strategy. Bags must be evenly distributed across the arms like an overworked supermarket checkout assistant. The heaviest bag? That goes in the dominant hand. Eggs? Balance them precariously on top of the bread and pray for the best.

But the real challenge comes when attempting to unlock the front door. You’ve made it to the final boss battle: extracting your keys while holding what amounts to your body weight in groceries. It’s an act of physical contortion, resembling an interpretative dance, all while the circulation is rapidly leaving your hands.

The Risk-Reward Ratio

Carrying everything in one go comes with its own set of high-stakes consequences.

Scenario 1: The Triumphant Victory

Everything makes it inside in one glorious feat of determination. You close the door behind you, take a deep breath, and revel in your own efficiency. Sure, your arms are temporarily useless and you may never regain feeling in your fingers, but the mission was a success.

Scenario 2: The Absolute Disaster

You got cocky. You pushed the limits. Just as you reach your front door, a handle snaps, a takeaway container tips sideways, and suddenly your precious prawn crackers are confetti for the local pigeons. You briefly consider crying.

Scenario 3: The Near Miss

You’ve made it. You fumble for your keys. Just as you start to celebrate, a single rogue tin rolls out of the bag, making a break for it down the driveway. You must now decide: drop everything and chase it or pretend it was never yours to begin with.

The Lies We Tell Ourselves

After every catastrophic failure, we promise ourselves that next time will be different.

“I’ll be more careful.” (You won’t.)

“I’ll do two trips next time.” (You absolutely won’t.)

“I’ll use one of those trendy granny trolleys.” (You won’t, but good luck convincing yourself.)

And yet, time and time again, we find ourselves standing at the car, calculating bag placement like we’re strategising a military operation. The cycle continues, fuelled by sheer stubbornness and the ever-looming threat of making an unnecessary second journey.

The One-Trip Curse

We all know deep down that making two trips is the sensible choice. But we’re British. Sensible choices aren’t really our thing. Whether it’s refusing to carry an umbrella despite torrential rain or saying “sorry” when someone else bumps into us, we are creatures of bizarre yet unshakable habits.

And so, the one-trip challenge remains. We will struggle. We will drop things. We will get stuck in doorways. But above all, we will persist—because no matter what, we will never make two trips.

And if we do, well, we just won’t talk about it.

By day, she works as a minion in a government department (no, not one of the cute yellow ones with dungarees). By night, she brings her wicked sense of humour to untypicable.co.uk as an occasional contributor, where she fearlessly tackles life’s nonsense with sharp wit, historical references, and the occasional inappropriate joke.

Kerry has no children (by choice, obviously), but she does have a cat, which is basically the same thing but with more attitude and fewer school runs. When she’s not writing, you’ll probably find her at a historical re-enactment, enthusiastically pretending she’s living in another century—preferably one with fewer emails and better hats.
