As children, we were showered with praise for the simplest achievements—tying our shoelaces, eating our lunch, or merely participating in activities without causing chaos. Stickers and gold stars were freely given, reinforcing the idea that even the smallest accomplishments deserved recognition. However, as we transition into adulthood, these affirmations abruptly vanish. Despite balancing jobs, finances, and personal responsibilities, there is little to no recognition for simply keeping our lives together. Lets explore the idea that adults, too, deserve symbolic rewards for their efforts in navigating the complexities of everyday life.

The Lack of Recognition in Adulthood

In childhood, even the most basic tasks were met with celebration. Whether it was completing homework, sharing toys, or following simple instructions, these actions were acknowledged with positive reinforcement. In contrast, adulthood presents an array of mundane yet necessary responsibilities that receive no commendation. The expectation is that adults will pay their bills, maintain their households, and fulfill their work obligations without the need for validation. This shift in societal expectation creates a void where small achievements go unnoticed, contributing to feelings of burnout and monotony.

The Everyday Tasks That Deserve Recognition

Making a Difficult Phone Call

For many, making phone calls is a daunting task. The effort involved in mustering the courage to dial a number, preparing mentally for the conversation, and maintaining composure while speaking to another person can be overwhelming. Successfully navigating a phone call, particularly one that involves resolving bureaucratic matters, is an accomplishment that should be acknowledged.

Preparing a Proper Meal

In a fast-paced world where convenience foods are readily available, preparing a meal from scratch is no small feat. The process of planning, cooking, and cleaning up afterward requires time and effort. Furthermore, ensuring that the meal is balanced and nutritious adds an additional layer of difficulty. Such efforts should be recognized as significant achievements in self-care and responsible living.

Maintaining a Healthy Sleep Schedule

The temptation to prolong bedtime, whether through binge-watching television shows or scrolling through social media, is a challenge many adults face. Choosing to sleep at a reasonable hour, despite the lure of distractions, demonstrates self-discipline and foresight. Prioritizing rest is essential for well-being, and the ability to do so consistently deserves commendation.

Enduring a Work Meeting with Patience

Work meetings often require a level of engagement that can be mentally draining. Remaining attentive, contributing meaningfully, and refraining from disengagement requires focus and self-control. Those who successfully navigate long and sometimes unnecessary discussions deserve acknowledgment for their perseverance and professionalism.

Being Honest About One’s Well-being

Society often encourages individuals to respond with a simple “I’m fine” when asked about their well-being. Choosing to be honest, whether in admitting exhaustion, stress, or uncertainty, takes courage. Such moments of vulnerability should be met with encouragement rather than dismissal, as emotional honesty is vital for mental health.

The Need for a Symbolic Reward System

To address the lack of recognition for adult achievements, a system of symbolic rewards could be introduced. Stickers for minor accomplishments, gold stars for notable achievements, and certificates for exceptional feats could serve as tangible affirmations of effort. Additionally, humorous yet meaningful tokens such as “I Did My Taxes” badges or “Survived Another Workweek” mugs could help reinforce a sense of accomplishment in daily life.

Conclusion

Adulthood is often marked by an absence of recognition for the everyday challenges individuals face. While society expects adults to fulfill their responsibilities without affirmation, it is essential to acknowledge the effort that goes into maintaining a balanced and functional life. By reintroducing small forms of validation, whether through personal acknowledgment or symbolic rewards, we can foster a culture that celebrates perseverance and resilience. If childhood achievements warrant gold stars, then adulthood surely deserves them as well.

By night, she brings her wicked sense of humour to untypicable.co.uk as an occasional contributor, where she fearlessly tackles life’s nonsense with sharp wit, historical references, and the occasional inappropriate joke.

Kerry has no children (by choice, obviously), but she does have a cat, which is basically the same thing but with more attitude and fewer school runs. When she’s not writing, you’ll probably find her at a historical re-enactment, enthusiastically pretending she’s living in another century—preferably one with fewer emails and better hats.

We’ve all been there: staring at a task that desperately needs doing, while every fiber of your being screams, “Not today.” Your brain cycles through excuses, distractions, and existential dread faster than you can refresh your Instagram feed. But where is motivation in all of this?

It’s like trying to load a webpage only to be greeted with the digital equivalent of your brain: Error 404: Motivation Not Found. Let’s take a closer look at why motivation sometimes feels like a missing file and what we can do about it.

Why Motivation Feels Like a Glitchy Program

The Motivation Myth
Motivation isn’t a constant stream of energy—it’s more like a pop-up ad. Sometimes it appears at the perfect moment (rarely), and other times, it’s a cruel tease, vanishing just as you need it most. Think of it like an unreliable browser extension: you expect it to work, but half the time, it doesn’t load properly because the conditions aren’t right.

Mental Bandwidth Overload
When you’re juggling a dozen mental tabs—work deadlines, grocery lists, existential crises—it’s no wonder motivation fails to load. Your brain’s processing power is maxed out, and instead of doing the important task, you end up doom-scrolling or watching videos of raccoons stealing cat food.

The Procrastination Virus
Procrastination is the malware of motivation. It sneaks into your operating system, disguising itself as “just five minutes of TikTok” (and I don’t normally use TikTok!) or “I’ll clean my entire house first,” and suddenly, the task is forgotten.

Common Errors in the Motivation System

Error: Task Overwhelming (Code 500)
Your brain freezes because the task feels too big. Why write one paragraph when it feels like climbing Everest?

Error: Undefined Purpose (Code 418)
If you don’t see the point of the task, your brain might file it under “Why bother?” and divert energy elsewhere.

Error: Background Apps Draining Energy (Code 302)
Mental fatigue from emotional stress, physical exhaustion, or decision overload can zap motivation before it even gets started.

Fixes for the Motivation Error

Run a Diagnostic: Break It Down
Large tasks feel impossible, but smaller chunks are manageable. Instead of “write the whole report,” start with “write the first sentence.” Progress snowballs.

Reboot the System: Take a Break
Sometimes, your brain just needs a quick reset. A walk, a snack, or a 10-minute dance party can refresh your mental RAM.

Install Rewards: Gamify the Task
Motivation likes incentives. Promise yourself a treat—coffee, chocolate, or an episode of your favorite show—when you complete a small milestone.

Turn Off Unnecessary Programs
Close those mental tabs that don’t serve the task. Worrying about next week’s schedule or what Karen from HR thinks of your email can wait.

Call Tech Support: Find Accountability
A friend, colleague, or app can help keep you on track. Sometimes, just knowing someone’s watching is enough to spark action.

Embrace the Lack of Motivation

Here’s the truth: even the best systems have downtime. Motivation is fleeting, but discipline and habits are your reliable backups. When you can’t summon the energy to care, lean on structure to carry you through.

And when all else fails, remember: it’s okay to rest. Sometimes, Error 404 just means the system needs maintenance.

Conclusion: The Search Continues

Motivation might feel like an elusive treasure, but it’s not entirely out of reach. With the right hacks, humor, and a touch of grace, you can navigate the glitches and keep moving forward—even if it’s one tab at a time.

So, the next time you’re tempted to give up, picture your brain as an old PC. Sure, it’s a bit slow and prone to errors, but with the right inputs, it’ll load eventually.

A tech-savvy PhD student hailing from South Yorkshire but now stationed in the flatlands of Lincolnshire, AJ writes with an irreverence that strips back the layers of academia, social norms, and the absurdities of daily life to reveal the humour lurking beneath.

As an autistic thinker, AJ’s perspective offers readers a rare blend of precision, curiosity, and wit. From dissecting the unspoken rituals of academia—like the silent war over the office thermostat—to exploring the sociology of “neurotypical small talk” and the bizarre hierarchies of campus coffee queues, AJ turns the ordinary into something both profound and hilarious.

AJ’s unassuming nature belies the sharpness of their commentary, which dives deep into the intersections of neurodiversity, tech culture, and the often-overlooked quirks of human behaviour. Whether questioning why university bureaucracy feels designed by Kafka or crafting surreal parodies of academic peer reviews, AJ writes with a balance of quiet intensity and playful absurdity that keeps readers coming back for more.

For those seeking a blog that is equal parts insightful, irreverent, and refreshingly authentic, AJ Wright provides a unique perspective that celebrates neurodiversity while poking fun at the peculiarities of the world we live in. Also a contributor at Thinking Sociologically.

There are those who get up at dawn, seize the day, and cross items off their to-do lists like productivity pros. And then… there are professional procrastinators, masters of delay who’ve perfected the fine art of doing everything but the task at hand. If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to be a full-time procrastinator, join me for a behind-the-scenes look into a typical day where goals are almost met, to-do lists are skillfully avoided, and distractions are plentiful.

9:00 AM – The Optimistic Start

The day begins like any other: a burst of ambition and high hopes. You make a fresh pot of coffee, feeling confident that today will be the day you conquer every single task. Your to-do list looks manageable, and you’re sure that today is going to be different.

But before you begin, you deserve a warm-up. Maybe a quick scroll through your emails? Surely there won’t be any rabbit holes there… except maybe that one link to an interesting article that leads to another, and another.

9:30 AM – Creating the Perfect Workspace

Now that you’ve warmed up with some email browsing, it’s time to set the stage. A productive workspace is essential, after all! You tidy up the desk, arrange your pens, and meticulously align your notepad and laptop. What’s that? A stray paperclip out of place? You can’t possibly focus until everything is perfectly organized.

After all, a cluttered space equals a cluttered mind—or at least that’s the excuse of the hour.

10:00 AM – Time for Some Background Research

Okay, enough stalling. It’s time to actually get to work! But before diving in, a little research couldn’t hurt. You open a few tabs to get some background information… which somehow leads you to reading up on the history of productivity apps. Before long, you’re looking up famous procrastinators in history and discovering that Leonardo da Vinci was one, too! Fascinating.

But wait, where did the time go?

11:00 AM – Snack Break (Vital for Energy!)

After so much “research,” it’s clear you’ll need a bit of sustenance to keep going. You head to the kitchen and start preparing a snack, only to realize you’re running low on your favourite tea. Naturally, this requires a trip to the shop—how can you focus without it?

A quick snack and grocery run later, you’re back and ready to tackle the work. Or at least, that’s the plan.

12:00 PM – Revising the To-Do List

Back at your desk, snack in hand, you suddenly realize the issue: your to-do list is too cluttered. You need to prioritize, set clear goals, and visualize your productivity journey. So, you spend a good 20 minutes rewriting your to-do list, categorizing each item by urgency.

One list turns into two, then three, as you separate “must-do” from “maybe-do.” Now, there’s a new problem—where to even begin?

12:30 PM – Lunchtime (A Much-Deserved Break)

After a morning of what can only be described as exhausting mental work, you’ve earned a lunch break. You sit down to a sandwich and watch a few quick episodes of that new series, which turns into a mini-binge because, well, you can’t leave on a cliffhanger.

The only downside? You start feeling that mid-day drowsiness creep in. Maybe a quick power nap could help recharge your productivity…

2:00 PM – The Midday Regret (But Also a Fresh Start!)

You wake up from your “quick” nap and immediately feel the regret setting in. It’s afternoon already, and you’re still staring down that to-do list. But now, you’re even more determined! You’ll tackle everything left on the list right now, all at once if needed.

It’s time to get serious, so you start by lighting a productivity candle, rearranging your desk (again), and cracking your knuckles like a serious professional.

2:30 PM – Deep Dive into Distractions

With focus finally within reach, you open your laptop and immediately remember a few minor “urgent” things you forgot—like checking the weather for the week or reading that article your friend sent. You briefly convince yourself that these tasks are actually relevant.

One thing leads to another, and before you know it, you’ve learned about five ways to optimize your plants’ light exposure and how to bake the perfect sourdough.

3:30 PM – Sudden Burst of Inspiration

Out of nowhere, you experience a random burst of motivation! Fueled by this unexpected energy, you type out a few sentences, cross one thing off your list, and start feeling the rush of momentum. But then, you remember: you still haven’t checked your messages.

You grab your phone, only to fall down the endless scrolling pit of social media, where you somehow wind up watching videos on things like “How to Train a Pigeon” and “Strange Facts About Mars.” Forty-five minutes later, you realize the inspiration has evaporated.

4:30 PM – The “Just One More Thing” Approach

Time is running out, but surely you can get a few things done before the end of the day. You set a timer for 15 minutes and tell yourself you’ll complete at least one task. But what’s this? A “quick” notification reminding you of a sale on the website you like? You’ve already missed out on so many deals; it won’t hurt to just check.

But those 15 minutes vanish, and suddenly, your workspace is cluttered with shopping tabs. Who knew you’d end the day with a new desk lamp?

5:00 PM – The “Tomorrow” Mentality Sets In

After a full day of meticulously avoiding the tasks you set out to complete, it’s time to face the reality. You’ve managed to accomplish… well, not a lot. But that’s okay! There’s always tomorrow, right? Tomorrow will be the day. You close your laptop, resolve to turn over a new leaf, and add “wake up early” to tomorrow’s list.

As a professional procrastinator, hope springs eternal, and there’s always tomorrow’s fresh start to look forward to. For now, you’re ready for the next important task of the day: relaxing with a well-deserved evening off.

Hailing originally from London, now living in the sleepy depths of Lincolnshire but claiming an allegiance to the absurd, Dwight has perfected the art of finding the surreal in real life. Whether it’s a spirited rant about the philosophical implications of queueing or a deep dive into why tea tastes better in a mug older than you, his blogs blur the line between the abstract and the everyday.

With an irreverent wit and a penchant for tangents that somehow come full circle, Dwight Warner doesn’t just write; he performs on the page. His humour is both sharp and delightfully nonsensical, like Monty Python met your nosiest neighbour and they decided to co-write a diary.

Known for being gregarious, Dwight is the life of any (real or metaphorical) party, whether he’s deconstructing the existential crisis of mismatched socks or sharing his inexplicable theories about why pigeons are secretly running the economy.

A larger-than-life personality with a laugh as loud as his opinions, Dwight Warner invites readers to step into a world where everything’s slightly askew—and that’s exactly how he likes it.
