It begins, as all great tragedies do, with purpose. You rise from your chair, propelled by a very clear, specific mission—maybe you’re going to get your glasses, check the thermostat, or finally retrieve the laundry you’ve restarted three times. Your legs move with confidence. Your face is set with resolve. You stride purposefully across the house, open the door to the next room, and then…

Nothing.

Absolutely nothing. Your brain is suddenly quieter than a village pub at 10:59 on a Monday. The thought you had—a mere five seconds ago—is now gone. Wiped. Replaced by a gentle, buzzing static and a mild feeling of betrayal. You stand there, blinking, as if the room might hand you a clue. It doesn’t.

Welcome, dear reader, to the ancient and bewildering art of forgetting why you walked into the room.

The Silent Crisis of the Upright Wanderer

What’s worse is that it always feels important, doesn’t it? You’re convinced it was something urgent. Vital. Possibly even life-saving. Was it medication? Was it to warn someone of impending doom? Was it to stop the oven from exploding? Probably not. But in the absence of clarity, your mind will conjure up the most dramatic possible stakes.

And still, nothing comes. You wander the room like a low-budget ghost, hovering between the kettle and the fruit bowl, searching for answers in the bananas. You do a full 360 spin, just in case something jogs your memory, like a cupboard that shouts “Glasses! You came in here for your glasses!”

But cupboards, as we know, are cruel and silent things.

The Doorway Effect (or: Why You Can Blame Architecture)

There’s an actual scientific theory for this known as the Doorway Effect. Yes, scientists have studied this. Because apparently, at some point, someone walked into a room, forgot why, and thought, You know what? This needs a grant and a lab coat.

The theory suggests that walking through a doorway creates a mental boundary. Your brain, ever the over-efficient filing cabinet, goes “Right! New room, new thoughts!”—and unceremoniously tosses the old one in the bin.

It’s like your brain thinks you’ve entered a new level of a video game and it’s time to load fresh objectives. Unfortunately, the only objective is now “stand in place and question your life choices.”

So if anyone catches you staring blankly at the microwave, you can now reply, “Ah yes, just experiencing a cognitive event caused by architectural transitions.” That’ll shut them up.

The Three Stages of Memory Loss (Room-Based Edition)

Denial
“It’ll come to me in a second.”
Spoiler: it won’t.

Panic
“Oh no. This is how it starts. This is the beginning of the end.”
You Google symptoms. You are convinced you’ve developed at least six new conditions in the time it takes to walk across the landing.

Resignation
You either sit down and pretend it never happened, or you pick up a book and mutter, “Well, I meant to do this anyway.”
You become the master of accidental intention.

The Accidental Errand Spiral

Sometimes, you’ll try to compensate by doing something else in the room, as if the original reason might sneak back in through the side door.

You tidy a cushion. You rearrange a drawer. You sigh at a plant. Then you leave the room still having no idea what you were meant to do—but now with the added bonus of having started a completely new task.

This is how going to get a pair of scissors results in you hoovering the landing, cleaning out the fridge, alphabetising your spice rack, and never, ever finding the scissors.

The Moment of Sudden, Pointless Clarity

Of course, the cruelest part of this whole debacle is that the thought always returns. But it doesn’t return when you want it to. It waits.

Hours later, in bed, wrapped in a blanket burrito, drifting off to sleep—it hits. “Socks! I was going to find socks!”

It’s 11:42pm. You’re tired. You will not be finding socks now. The socks can wait. The thought, however, will now live rent-free in your head until morning, tapping on your brain like a needy pigeon.

Life Lessons from a Forgotten Thought

So what can we take from this deeply British rite of passage?

We could learn humility, for starters. No matter how intelligent, important, or caffeinated you are, you’re still at the mercy of your own synapses.

We could learn mindfulness. Maybe the room wanted us to stop, to pause, to reflect. To stand in silence and wonder what we’re doing with our lives (beyond looking for socks).

Or we could simply accept that the human brain, like a dodgy sat-nav, will occasionally reroute us for no reason other than sheer mischief.

And that’s fine.

Learn to Embrace the Blank

Forgetting why you walked into a room isn’t a personal failing. It’s a universal glitch. A sign that we’re busy, full of thoughts, and tragically reliant on a brain that occasionally decides to do a spontaneous reboot.

So next time it happens, don’t worry. Take a deep breath. Stare at the wall like it owes you money. And know that somewhere—possibly in the next room—there’s a thought looking for you just as hard as you’re looking for it.

And if all else fails, boil the kettle and grab a biscuit. Even if it wasn’t the reason you came in, it’s never a bad outcome.

Hailing originally from London, now living in the sleepy depths of Lincolnshire but claiming an allegiance to the absurd, Dwight has perfected the art of finding the surreal in real life. Whether it’s a spirited rant about the philosophical implications of queueing or a deep dive into why tea tastes better in a mug older than you, his blogs blur the line between the abstract and the everyday.

With an irreverent wit and a penchant for tangents that somehow come full circle, Dwight Warner doesn’t just write; he performs on the page. His humour is both sharp and delightfully nonsensical, like Monty Python met your nosiest neighbour and they decided to co-write a diary.

Known for being gregarious, Dwight is the life of any (real or metaphorical) party, whether he’s deconstructing the existential crisis of mismatched socks or sharing his inexplicable theories about why pigeons are secretly running the economy.

A larger-than-life personality with a laugh as loud as his opinions, Dwight Warner invites readers to step into a world where everything’s slightly askew—and that’s exactly how he likes it.

A humorous tale of seaside survival, as one hapless human learns the hard way that arguing with a seagull is a battle you will never win.

Seagulls. Winged menaces. Coastal tyrants. Nature’s answer to an aggressive debt collector. No other bird has perfected the art of intimidation quite like them. You don’t feed seagulls—they take. You don’t argue with seagulls—they win.

And yet, every year, thousands of unsuspecting British holidaymakers attempt to engage in unwinnable battles with these feathery bandits. A chip is stolen. A sandwich is dive-bombed. A flustered human is left shaking their fist at the sky, while the seagull, victorious, stands atop a bin, smirking.

It’s a tale as old as time. You sit down at a seaside bench, chips in hand, the salty breeze carrying the scent of vinegar and fried perfection. Life is good. But then, from somewhere above—perhaps the rooftops, perhaps the very depths of hell itself—they notice you. You don’t see them at first. Seagulls are clever that way. They wait. They watch. You take a bite, blissfully unaware of the approaching chaos. And then, as if signalled by some unseen commander, the first gull arrives.

The Psychological Warfare Begins

At first, they act casual. The lead gull lands a few feet away, feigning mild interest in a discarded napkin. It shuffles its feet, flicks its beady little eyes in your direction, and pretends not to care. It’s a ruse. This is the reconnaissance phase—gauging your weakness, assessing your defensive capabilities, waiting for the right moment to strike.

And then the reinforcements arrive. You spot another gull lurking on the roof of a nearby fish and chip shop, ruffling its feathers like a boxer warming up before a fight. Another lands behind you. They are encircling you now, strategically placing themselves to block every possible escape route.

It is at this point that you make your first mistake: acknowledging them. A brief glance in their direction, a muttered “Oh no,” or worse, an attempt to shoo them away. This is exactly what they wanted. The moment you react, they know they’ve won. You’re rattled.

Desperation sets in. You hunch protectively over your meal, shielding it with your arms like a squirrel hoarding the last nut of the winter. But deep down, you know it’s pointless. They will get what they came for. It is simply a question of how much damage they will do in the process.

The Moment of Impact

Just as you think you might make it through this ordeal unscathed, it happens. The leader of the flock launches into action, wings flapping, beak open, talons primed for battle. It moves with the precision of a trained assassin.

One second, you have a full portion of chips. The next, your hand is suspiciously lighter. Your prize is gone, clamped triumphantly in the gull’s beak as it retreats to a safe distance, cackling in a way that can only be described as deeply smug.

You sit there in stunned silence, staring at the space where your food used to be. The gull does not break eye contact. It wants you to know you’ve lost. It does not fear you. It never did.

And then, just to add insult to injury, it takes a single, deliberate bite… and drops the rest on the floor.

Not for itself, but for the others.

A frenzy ensues. More gulls descend, fighting, screeching, pecking at the remains of what was once your lunch. You watch helplessly, your hands still hovering where your chips used to be, your brain trying to process what has just happened.

Nearby, a pensioner chuckles. This isn’t their first time seeing this. It won’t be the last.

The Aftermath and The Questions That Haunt You

In the quiet moments after the attack, as you sit in shame, a single thought crosses your mind: why me?

Why didn’t they go for the person two benches down? Why did they specifically target your meal? Could it have been the way you unwrapped it? Did you somehow signal weakness? Is this personal?

And, perhaps the worst realisation of all—why didn’t you fight harder?

Your instincts were pathetic. Your response was slow. At no point did you even consider countermeasures like flapping your arms or making a scene. You simply let it happen. You are complicit in your own downfall.

As you stand up to leave, you vow that next time—next time—you’ll be ready. But you won’t. Because seagulls are always two steps ahead.

How to Prevent the Inevitable (You Can’t, But Let’s Pretend You Can)

By now, you understand the natural order—seagulls don’t steal food, they claim it. But if you wish to delay the inevitable, a few tactics may buy you precious moments with your meal.

Some claim that offering a sacrificial chip—throwing one far away as a distraction—can create enough of a diversion to eat at least half your portion in peace. Others suggest standing under an umbrella, as though shielding yourself from an aerial bombardment.

There’s even a theory that eating indoors makes you less of a target, but frankly, if you’re not willing to sit outside and suffer for your British seaside experience, why even bother coming at all?

The Seagull Always Wins

Ultimately, no amount of preparation can change the fundamental truth: this was never your food to begin with. The moment you stepped onto that pier, that promenade, that unsuspecting park bench, you were simply a delivery system for seagull sustenance.

So next time you find yourself clutching a freshly wrapped portion of chips by the coast, take a moment. Look around. Somewhere, just out of sight, a seagull is watching. Waiting.

Because you don’t win arguments with seagulls. You survive them. And if you’re lucky, you might get a few bites in before they remind you who’s really in charge.
