A humorous mid-January reflection on why New Year’s resolutions tend to collapse by the 15th — not because we’re weak-willed, but because January is objectively the worst month for self-improvement. In the dark, cold, and financially cursed weeks after Christmas, most of us discover that motivation has seasonal settings.

It’s 15 January, which means we’ve officially reached that magical point in the calendar known as Resolution Failure Fortnight.

This is the period where we all quietly abandon the ambitious New Year versions of ourselves — the ones who meal-prepped quinoa, set six alarms for morning runs, and downloaded language apps with names like LinguaLion — and revert to the more realistic baseline model: a human being who eats carbs in winter and doesn’t want to learn Spanish in the dark.

I am not judging. I am simply reporting from the field.

The Ritual of January Delusion

Every year, without fail, I witness (and participate in) the same ceremony:

31 December: “New Year, New Me! I will transform! I will drink water! I will sort my paperwork!”

15 January: “How many days does cheese keep?”

My gym app thinks I’ve died. My smartwatch has stopped encouraging me and has adopted the tone of a disappointed uncle. Duolingo has emailed three times to check I’m “safe and well”.

Future Me — the one who will supposedly wake up at 5am, jog in the frost, learn Italian, and master spreadsheets — is a hallucination. Present Me is cold, tired, and still wearing Christmas socks.

The Psychology Bit (But Fun)

We do this because humans love the idea of temporal personality upgrades.

We believe in Future Us — a taller, calmer, more organised subspecies who meal preps on Sundays and has opinions on storage solutions.

But here’s the catch: Future Us has the same brain as Present Us, just slightly older and more disappointed.

If we were serious about improvement, we’d schedule it for April. April has sunlight. April has warmth. April doesn’t ask you to become a better person while you’re scraping ice off your car at 7:43am.

January Is Hostile Territory

Let’s talk about conditions.

January is objectively the worst month for any kind of self-improvement. It is a post-Christmas emotional hangover mixed with weather that feels like punishment.

Consider the data:

Daylight lasts fourteen minutes. On a good day.

Everyone is poor, ill, or both.

The heating bill arrives and no one is emotionally ready.

The sky hasn’t been blue since mid-November.

Vegetables taste like damp cardboard.

Self-help books talk about discipline. Self-help books do not talk about DEFRA grit shortages.

The Resolution Graveyard

By mid-January, most resolutions have either died or gone into witness protection.

“Eat healthier” collapses the moment someone brings biscuits to work.

“Exercise more” dies when you realise it’s dark, raining, and the gym smells like determination and damp socks.

“Learn a language” ends when Duolingo asks you to conjugate something.

I once tried to learn French in January. It lasted until I discovered past participles, at which point I decided bilingualism was for warmer climates.

“Be organised” fails when you buy a fancy planner, write two inspiring sentences, and then spend the rest of the year using it as a coaster.

“Drink less” doesn’t survive the first Thursday because sometimes it’s Thursday.

“Save money” dies immediately after the MOT.

“Be a better person” is far too vague to implement, especially in traffic.

The Seasonal Mismatch Problem

Here’s the actual issue: we schedule self-improvement for the exact moment the environment is least compatible with change.

January is built for soup, blankets, mild hibernation, and complaining about condensation.

It is not built for transcendence.

There’s a reason bears don’t do Personal Growth in winter. They go to sleep, which is arguably the most successful wellness strategy in nature.

If bears did New Year’s resolutions, they’d do them in spring:

“Eat more berries, be less grumpy, stop fighting bins.”

Not: “Run 5km in hail, stop comfort eating, reinvent personality.”

The Case for April

I propose a radical alternative: the April Resolution.

April has:

sunlight past 5pm

temperatures above “miserable”

functioning humans in the parks

fruit that tastes like fruit

marginally improved national morale

Motivation is not a moral quality. It is a seasonal resource.

In January, motivation is at a seasonal low, like blackberries or public happiness.

In April, motivation spikes because our bodies stop experiencing constant betrayal from the weather.

Studies (conducted by me, in my kitchen) show that self-improvement increases by 70% in conditions where daylight exists.

The Important Part: You Didn’t Fail

If you’ve abandoned your resolutions already, congratulations.

That doesn’t make you weak-willed. It makes you correctly calibrated for winter.

The calendar is an arbitrary human invention. There is no moral authority that says self-improvement must begin in the darkest, coldest, most bankrupt month of the year.

You don’t need a date. You need daylight and snacks.

Perhaps the only resolution worth keeping in January is:

“Be slightly kinder to yourself than last year.”

If you manage that, then you’re already ahead of schedule.

A tech-savvy PhD student hailing from South Yorkshire but now stationed in the flatlands of Lincolnshire, AJ writes with an irreverence that strips back the layers of academia, social norms, and the absurdities of daily life to reveal the humour lurking beneath.

As an autistic thinker, AJ’s perspective offers readers a rare blend of precision, curiosity, and wit. From dissecting the unspoken rituals of academia—like the silent war over the office thermostat—to exploring the sociology of “neurotypical small talk” and the bizarre hierarchies of campus coffee queues, AJ turns the ordinary into something both profound and hilarious.

AJ’s unassuming nature belies the sharpness of their commentary, which dives deep into the intersections of neurodiversity, tech culture, and the often-overlooked quirks of human behaviour. Whether questioning why university bureaucracy feels designed by Kafka or crafting surreal parodies of academic peer reviews, AJ writes with a balance of quiet intensity and playful absurdity that keeps readers coming back for more.

For those seeking a blog that is equal parts insightful, irreverent, and refreshingly authentic, AJ Wright provides a unique perspective that celebrates neurodiversity while poking fun at the peculiarities of the world we live in. Also a contributor at Thinking Sociologically.

Ever wondered what an IKEA Allen key thinks about its short, twisted life? This surreal monologue reveals the tragic tale of a hexagonal tool born for assembly and destined for abandonment in the back of your junk drawer.

I was forged in the fires of a nameless factory on the outskirts of Malmö, born of alloy and ennui. One of a thousand in my batch, we were shaped with precision, packaged without ceremony, and scattered across the globe—each of us destined for a life of brief importance and eternal abandonment.

My name? I do not have one. But once, they called me “Tool 103488.”

I am the Allen key. You know me. You lose me. You curse me.

My life begins in the cardboard cradle of flat-pack furniture, nestled beside dowels and despair. I am small, yes—but vital. Without me, you are nothing. Your coffee table dreams will lie in planks. Your sideboard will be a pile of existential rubble.

And yet, you do not respect me.

You treat me like a one-night wrench. You use me until your wrist aches, then cast me aside into the drawer of forgotten things. I lie beside a broken biro and a key that opens no known lock. We speak sometimes. The biro dreams of being refilled. The key is waiting for its door.

Do you know what it’s like to be summoned only in times of chaos? To be gripped with greasy hands, twisted in directions I was not designed to go, jammed into screws I was never meant to know?

Once, I was used to open a tin of paint. Paint. The shame still haunts me.

I have known many homes. I was once shipped inside a “BJÖRKBOLL” shelving unit to a man named Dennis who never finished high school but insists on calling himself a “DIY consultant.” He stripped every screw. Every. Single. One. I screamed in silence. He heard nothing.

And yet… I endure.

I am hexagonal. I am humble. I will outlast you.

When the Earth is dust and your meatballs have gone cold, I will still be here—in the back of a junk drawer, next to 17 USB cables and an IKEA pencil too short to write with. Waiting. Watching. Ready to rise when the flat-pack prophecy is fulfilled.

Remember me.

Hailing originally from London, now living in the sleepy depths of Lincolnshire but claiming an allegiance to the absurd, Dwight has perfected the art of finding the surreal in real life. Whether it’s a spirited rant about the philosophical implications of queueing or a deep dive into why tea tastes better in a mug older than you, his blogs blur the line between the abstract and the everyday.

With an irreverent wit and a penchant for tangents that somehow come full circle, Dwight Warner doesn’t just write; he performs on the page. His humour is both sharp and delightfully nonsensical, like Monty Python met your nosiest neighbour and they decided to co-write a diary.

Known for being gregarious, Dwight is the life of any (real or metaphorical) party, whether he’s deconstructing the existential crisis of mismatched socks or sharing his inexplicable theories about why pigeons are secretly running the economy.

A larger-than-life personality with a laugh as loud as his opinions, Dwight Warner invites readers to step into a world where everything’s slightly askew—and that’s exactly how he likes it.

What if Inspector Morse swapped Oxford’s dreaming spires for Sheffield Polytechnic’s brutalist breeze-blocks? This satirical rewrite reimagines the iconic detective solving petty crimes, battling chip pan conspiracies, and brooding over pints of bitter in South Yorkshire. Less Wagner, more Status Quo.

Forget the dreaming spires, dusty dons, and Latin-quoting lords of Oxford. Let us imagine a world where Inspector Morse didn’t attend the hallowed halls of one of Britain’s most elite institutions, but instead honed his craft at Sheffield Polytechnic, circa 1972. Welcome to an alternate universe where murders are solved not with opera and obscure crossword clues, but with Northern grit, a battered Ford Cortina, and a working knowledge of kettle repair and how to fend off a dodgy landlord with a strongly worded letter.

Setting the Scene: Morse, Reimagined

Gone are the cloisters and the cobbled lanes of Oxford. Enter: Sheffield in the ’70s. Concrete brutalism as far as the eye can see, fog rolling in from the Peak District, and a pervasive smell of chip fat and ambition.

Morse’s flat is a converted bedsit above a Kwik Save, where the ceiling occasionally leaks and the neighbour plays darts at 3am. His local is the King Edward Working Men’s Club, where the quiz night ends in fisticuffs and the jukebox skips if you don’t hit it with a spanner. The landlord, Big Trev, serves pints with a side of political incorrectness and once threatened to bar Morse for asking if they had anything ‘hoppy’ on tap.

The opening credits feature a moody synthesiser version of On Ilkla Moor Baht ‘at, over grainy shots of Sheffield’s skyline, intercut with a steel mill pouring molten metal, a lost ferret on a canal path, and Morse looking broodingly at a cracked mug of Tetley’s.

The Poly Years

Instead of lounging through tutorials in ancient libraries, Morse studied Applied Criminology and Transport Planning in a breeze-block lecture hall next to a Wimpy. The polytechnic’s most advanced technology was a projector that wheezed like a pit pony and once caught fire during a lecture on road signage.

He paid his way through uni with a part-time job at a steel foundry, which left him with a permanent disdain for anyone who called a 9am lecture “early.” He missed his third-year exam after getting stuck behind a slow-moving milk float on the A61 and once submitted coursework late because his flatmate had used the typewriter ribbon to fix his motorbike.

His dissertation? “Socioeconomic Profiling in South Yorkshire Petty Crime”—a masterful 14,000-word rant about dog theft, ferret-related assaults, and illegal pigeon racing. It received a First and a free pint from the Dean, who ran a greyhound on weekends.

Cultural Differences: Oxford vs Sheffield Poly

At Oxford, Morse was imagined as a brooding intellectual with a penchant for Wagner and crossword puzzles, gliding through life in a polished Jaguar Mark 2 and sipping floral ales in mahogany-clad pubs where everyone spoke in riddles and wore tweed without irony. Conversations revolved around metaphysics, literary allusions, and whether the port was a bit corked this evening.

But in the Sheffield Polyverse, Morse’s music taste skews more Status Quo than Schubert. His car of choice? A 1971 Ford Cortina that smells permanently of damp carpets and suspicious takeaways. Where Oxford Morse might quote Nietzsche, Sheffield Morse swears by the sayings of his Uncle Les: “People are scum, lad. Trust no one with clean shoes.”

He doesn’t sip ale with floral notes; he downs bitter from a straight glass, preferably served lukewarm and with minimal head. Dinner isn’t a candlelit affair with dons—it’s a spam bap eaten behind the bins of the student union, ideally with a pickled egg on the side. Black-tie events are swapped for ska nights at the student bar, where he only gets in free if he promises not to dance.

Instead of discussing continental philosophy, he argues passionately about the offside rule with Baz from Catering. His idea of fine culture is a decent meat raffle and a working dartboard. And rather than haunting bookshops for out-of-print poetry, Morse is more likely to be seen in Netto, comparing tinned meat brands.

Morse’s Northern Mysteries

Without the Latin puns and corrupt dons, Morse’s cases take on a different flavour:

The Case of the Stolen Pigeon Lofts: A turf war between rival pigeon fanciers turns deadly after someone’s champion bird goes missing. There’s a feather trail to follow… and it leads to the allotments.

Murder at the Chip Pan Factory: The night shift turns sinister. Was it sabotage, or just Brian from Accounts being an arse again? Spud thinks it was Sandra from HR. Morse suspects a disgruntled line manager and a dodgy vat of beef dripping.

The Curse of the Do-It-Yourself Conservatory: A man is found trapped beneath 400kg of poorly installed double glazing. Accident or revenge from the local council’s planning committee? A taped copy of Ground Force might hold the answer.

Death by Henderson’s Relish: A bottle swapped. A stew sabotaged. A family recipe turned fatal. Only Morse can navigate the etiquette of Yorkshire condiments and unpick this culinary crime.

The Disappearance of Elvis Barry: A local impersonator goes missing just before his big night at Mecca Bingo. Was it jealousy? Sabotage? Or simply a dodgy van with no MOT?

Clues are often scrawled on betting slips, chip shop wrappers, or overheard at the bookies while pretending to read the racing form. Morse solves crimes through a mix of instinct, pint-fuelled deduction, and a dangerously intimate knowledge of South Yorkshire’s bus timetables and the social code of laundrette queueing.

Inspector Lewis? No, Meet Spud

Morse’s sidekick is no longer the gentle, loyal Lewis. Meet Spud—a gobby lad from Barnsley with a thick accent, a fondness for pork scratchings, and a part-time criminology diploma from the Open University. He lives with his nan, drives a rusting Vauxhall Viva, and once broke up a fight in Netto using only a bag of frozen peas and a withering look.

Spud has a nose for nonsense, a sixth sense for stolen mobility scooters, and a deep distrust of any crime scene that smells of Fabreeze. He once tried to arrest a goose for disturbing the peace and has strong opinions about which Greggs in Sheffield makes the best sausage roll (“not the one near the Moor, they burn ’em”).

Together, Morse and Spud represent a new kind of policing: less opera, more shouting at teenagers on mopeds, and the occasional off-the-books interrogation over a game of darts and two pints of John Smith’s.

Would He Still Be Morse?

Absolutely. Still melancholic, still uncomfortable with emotions, and still solving murders with a weary sigh and the occasional existential monologue. Only now, he broods while sat on a broken park bench, drinking lukewarm tea from a Thermos, watching a pigeon walk into a newsagent like it owns the place.

Instead of uncovering dark secrets in elite colleges, he’s investigating housing estate drama, under-the-table chip shop dealings, and the mysterious disappearance of a garden gnome called Terry. His music collection may be 100% less Wagner, but his cassette labelled “MIXTAPE 1980: MOURNFUL BANGERS” still gets regular use.

He doesn’t own a crossword dictionary. He is the crossword dictionary—just with more chip grease.

Final Thoughts

Would Morse still have become a great detective without Oxford’s polish? Probably. But he’d also know how to fix a boiler, spot a forged bus pass at fifty paces, and tell you which local has the best darts team. He’d understand that justice isn’t just found in courtrooms and college chapels, but also in backstreet boozers, launderettes, and snooker halls.

And isn’t that… just a bit more useful?

Next week: Poirot relocates to Wakefield and opens a second-hand suit shop. Maybe.

There are few acts in life more deceptively simple—and more culturally volatile—than making a cup of tea. It starts innocently enough. A mug, a bag, a kettle. But from the moment you decide whether to add milk before or after the hot water, you are declaring something profound about your character. Something your ancestors would have judged. Something the neighbours definitely still do. It is, in essence, a ritual masquerading as a refreshment. A personal creed disguised as a humble beverage. No one drinks tea by accident. You commit to tea.

I was first accused of being a “tea bastard” during a long weekend in Scarborough. My crime? Leaving the tea bag in while drinking. I’d never considered it a particularly radical act. It wasn’t like I’d stirred it with a finger or served it in a shoe. But apparently, in certain circles, a lingering bag is akin to inviting chaos to dinner and letting it drink straight from the milk bottle. It changes the dynamic entirely, apparently. Tea, I was informed, is not to be consumed with the bag still lurking at the bottom like a damp secret. The bag must be exorcised.

The Ritual of the Brew

Since then, I’ve become acutely aware of the silent social choreography that accompanies the making of tea. The way people glance at each other’s mugs. The pause after being handed a cuppa, when one inspects the colour, the strength, the… texture of it. You can ruin a friendship with the wrong shade of beige. And don’t even mention herbal tea in a Yorkshire household unless you want to be shunned for three generations.

Milk First and Other Crimes

Of course, the tea-making process is riddled with pitfalls far beyond the timing of the bag’s extraction. There is, for instance, the “milk first” heresy. Allegedly a technique born to protect fine china from thermal shock, it’s now more often deployed by those who enjoy provoking quiet disapproval at office kettles. You know the type. They also eat crisps during Zoom calls and consider five minutes of steeping “a suggestion, not a rule.” These are the same people who refer to their brew as a “beverage” and use the phrase “tea experience” unironically.

Then there’s the matter of stirring. Some do it as a gentle swirl, a calming meditative act like raking sand in a Zen garden. Others thrash the spoon about like they’re fending off a wasp. I once witnessed someone stir anti-clockwise and then reverse the direction mid-way through, as though trying to undo something terrible they’d done in a past life. They said it “helps the infusion.” I think it just helps people avoid sitting near them in meetings. There is no science to it, only superstition and a desperate need to feel in control of something in this chaotic world.

Biscuit Judgement and Mug Psychology

What we must acknowledge—painful though it may be—is that tea has become less a drink and more a personality test with liquid consequences. The kind of mug you use is a red flag all on its own. The oversized novelty one that says “But first, tea”? You peaked socially in 2013 and have strong opinions about stationery. The tiny, elegant porcelain cup? You don’t actually like tea, but you enjoy judging others who do. The clear glass mug? You’re a sociopath, or possibly European. There is no neutral ground here. Even a plain white mug says, “I gave up on joy in 2007 and never looked back.”

And then there are the mugs that never get washed. The ones with a brown patina inside that, if scraped, could reveal layers of your entire adult life. Each stain a memory. Each ring a regret. You may think you’re brewing tea, but the mug knows. The mug always knows.

Even the biscuit you pair with your brew tells a story. A Rich Tea means you live cautiously and probably own several beige jumpers. A Hobnob suggests inner resilience and a healthy disregard for dental work. If you dunk a Jaffa Cake, you’re either boldly redefining social convention—or you’ve never known true consequence. Custard Creams are the choice of the emotionally repressed; Bourbons, the chronically underestimated.

And then there’s the dunking technique itself. Do you go all-in? A confident plunge followed by immediate consumption? Or do you hover cautiously, calculating the sog-factor with military precision? A moment too long and your biscuit collapses like a failed investment. Too short and it’s just a warm disappointment. Either way, you’re left with crumbs in your drink and questions about your own decisiveness.

More Than Just a Drink

All of which leads us to the unspoken truth of the British tea experience: it is not about flavour. It is about ritual, and judgment, and passive-aggressively implying that someone else has made it wrong. It is an expression of deeply rooted cultural neuroses. A cup of tea is a performance, a statement, and a silent protest against modernity, all in one mildly steaming vessel.

We may pretend that tea is comforting, a national balm in liquid form. But deep down, every cup is a battlefield. The war isn’t between Yorkshire and PG Tips. It’s between us and the creeping suspicion that maybe, just maybe, we are the tea bastard. And worse—everyone knows it.

So the next time you make a cup, be mindful. Not of the temperature, or the steep time, or whether the milk has gone a bit funny. Be mindful of the eyes watching. Judging. Ranking you in the secret national database of acceptable tea practice. And if you leave your used tea bag in the sink, unwrapped and leaking tannin like a bleeding sachet of regret?

You deserve whatever hell you’re steeping in.

And remember this: in Britain, no one is more than two social missteps away from being offered tea as a form of subtle punishment. Never a hug. Never a word of comfort. Just a mug placed in front of you, full of scalding, judgmental beige.

Drink it. But know: the tea is watching you too.

A darkly comic deep-dive into the bureaucratic injustice of toilet sensor lights turning off mid-poo, featuring one man’s cubicle crisis.

It began, as all tragedies do, with optimism.

Colin from Accounts had just eaten an uninspiring Pret wrap and wandered to the office loo—armed with his phone, a sense of entitlement, and the noble dream of five undisturbed minutes. The world outside could wait. Emails could rot. He had entered that sacred temple of beige tiles and uncomfortable echoes to answer nature’s call, ideally at his own pace.

And then, precisely 2 minutes and 57 seconds into his porcelain pilgrimage, the lights went out.

Total darkness. No warning. No flicker. No “Just so you know I’m turning off” blink of courtesy. Just the swift extinguishing of hope, hygiene, and visual orientation.

Colin paused, pants around ankles, heart pounding faintly to the beat of the motion sensor’s betrayal.

A Brief History of Sensor-Based Injustice

At some point in the last decade, a facilities manager—possibly drunk on power and Dairylea Lunchables—decided that switches were too pedestrian. Instead, we now trust our most vulnerable moments to motion-activated lighting systems, those fickle electric sentinels whose job it is to determine whether or not we still exist.

And they have standards.

According to the anonymous engineer James <del>threatened</del> politely emailed, the standard toilet light timeout is “180 seconds of inactivity.” Inactivity, in this case, being defined as not flailing like you’re attempting semaphore through a locked cubicle door.

So if you’re quietly sitting—reading, reflecting, gently questioning your life choices—you’re invisible.

You are nothing to the sensor.

Colin’s Hour of Darkness

Trapped mid-process, Colin had three options:

Call for help – unlikely, given the office’s culture of stoic emotional repression.

Wipe, stand, and re-activate the sensor – a logistical ballet requiring balance, precision, and a bravery not seen since the zipline incident at last year’s team-building retreat.

Wave hand wildly under stall door – easily misinterpreted by passers-by as either flirtation or distress.

He chose all three. In sequence. In silence.

No one came.

The Existential Implications

Why is the timeout so short? Who decided three minutes was the natural limit for bowel-based contemplation?

Is it a subtle productivity push? A quiet HR nudge to ensure no employee feels comfortable for longer than 180 seconds?

Or worse: a Facilities Department vendetta against “long-sitters”?

One theory (unconfirmed) suggests the sensors were calibrated by someone who’s never eaten fibre. Another posits that it’s a deliberate psychological tactic, designed to reinforce a culture of urgency, movement, and clenched restraint.

Proposed Solutions from Staff

Installing a small disco ball to reflect movement inside each cubicle. (Denied due to “vibe risk.”)

Rotating seats that keep the sensor happy while inducing nausea. (Shelved indefinitely.)

Encouraging staff to practice “express evacuations”. (HR was reportedly very interested in this until they realised what it meant.)

One intern allegedly brought in a desk fan on a timer. We are watching him carefully.

Final Thoughts (In the Dark)

Colin eventually emerged, blinking into the light like a mole in Dockers chinos. His dignity may never fully recover.

So to whoever set the timer, wherever you are, we say this:

Extend the minutes. Be kind. A bowel is not a stopwatch.

And to our fellow stall-sitters, torch users, and mid-dump dancers in the dark—we see you. Even if the sensor doesn’t.

With a mind as sharp as a stiletto and a penchant for science-tinged musings, James blends the surreal with the everyday, crafting blogs that feel like the lovechild of a physics textbook and a fever dream.

Equally at home dissecting the absurdities of modern life as he is explaining quantum theory with alarming metaphors, James writes with the wit of someone who knows too much and the irreverence of someone who doesn’t care. His posts are infused with a dark humour that dares you to laugh at the strange, the inexplicable, and the occasionally terrifying truths of the universe—whether it’s the unnerving accuracy of Alexa or the existential menace of wasps.

A figure of mystery with a slightly unsettling edge, James is the sort of bloke who’d explain the meaning of life over a pint, but only after a dramatic pause long enough to make you question your own existence. His wit cuts deep, his insights are sharp, and his ability to make the surreal feel strangely plausible keeps readers coming back for more.

Ever wondered why cheese tastes better eaten standing up at midnight in the fridge light? A whimsical reflection on illicit cheddar, rebellion, and the psychology of secret dairy feasts.

It’s 11:07 p.m. You’re standing in your kitchen, bathed in the cold, unforgiving glow of the open fridge. Your hair is a mess. You’re wearing pyjamas with questionable stains. And there it is: the cheddar. Lurking on the middle shelf, half-wrapped in cling film like a damp ancient relic, calling to you with the silent desperation of a Shakespearean soliloquy.

You cut yourself a piece with a knife that was drying on the draining board, possibly clean, probably not. You pop it into your mouth. And in that exact moment — that standing, slightly hunched, fridge-lit moment — it is the most delicious cheese you have ever tasted in your life.

The Illicit Cheddar Effect

If you were to serve yourself the same piece of cheese at noon tomorrow, cut with care onto a plate, paired with an apple and a sense of dignity, it would taste… fine. Adequate. Pleasant enough. But it would not taste like illicit midnight cheddar.

Because cheese consumed upright, half asleep, in the humming companionship of the fridge, tastes better than any cheese consumed with manners and crockery. It is simply fact.

Part of it is the rebellion. You’re breaking society’s unspoken rule that eating is a seated activity, preferably at a table, preferably with a napkin, preferably in daylight. You’re casting aside decency, posture, and temperature regulation to indulge in an entirely private snack ceremony. It is cheese eaten outside the social contract. Cheese of freedom.

A Question of Guilt (and Dairy-Based Philosophy)

Perhaps it’s the guilt that enhances the flavour. Cheese is never guilt-free. Even the most joyful cheese carries the faint whisper of, “Should you, though?” But stolen cheese — cheese eaten in secret, from the block, with no plate in sight — carries a deeper frisson of wrongdoing. It becomes a forbidden food, an illicit dairy affair. And like all forbidden things, it gains power.

Or perhaps it’s the fridge light itself. That stark fluorescence turns the mundane into the dramatic. A block of Cathedral City becomes an object of devotion, its waxy rind catching the light like a golden idol. The thin slice you carve becomes a ritual offering to the gods of saturated fat. You stand there chewing, door ajar, feeling the cold air swirl around your ankles, and for one glorious moment you are a creature of pure instinct. You are alive. You are powerful. You are eating cheese while everyone else sleeps.

Cheddar of the Night

I have eaten cheese seated at a candlelit table, cheese arranged on a slate board with grapes and crackers and a pretence of refinement. It was pleasant, yes, but it did not taste like victory. Cheese eaten while standing in the fridge light tastes like something you got away with. A minor rebellion against adulthood’s crushing rules about proper behaviour.

So tonight, if you find yourself drawn once again to that bright-lit altar of leftover pasta and half-empty condiments, and you stand there, shivering in your dressing gown, gnawing cheddar straight from the block — know that you are not alone. You are part of an ancient tribe of nocturnal snackers, keepers of the sacred midnight dairy feast.

And yes, it really does taste better this way.

What if the most iconic historical figures weren’t waging wars, inventing theories or getting famously executed—but instead, were hosting daytime talk shows? Imagine the uncomfortable couch conversations, the passive-aggressive applause, and the inevitable audience gasp. Here are a few thoroughly bizarre, and strangely believable, talk show concepts that throw the centuries into a blender and hit “chaotic purée.”

“Tea & Treason” with Host: Queen Elizabeth I

Guest: Guy Fawkes

The show opens with a trumpet fanfare and a subtle waft of burning gunpowder. Queen Elizabeth I sits regally on a velvet throne disguised as a chat-show armchair, sipping from an aggressively ornate teacup. She welcomes her guest, Guy Fawkes, with a chillingly polite smile that screams, “We behead with grace in this house.”

Guy Fawkes arrives to awkward applause, shuffling nervously in his oversized cloak and powdered wig (a wardrobe choice he clearly did not approve). They exchange pleasantries like two people pretending not to remember that one tried to blow up the other’s government.

Topic: “So, You Tried to Blow Up Parliament: Let’s Unpack That.”

Fawkes launches into a poetic but slightly bitter explanation of disenfranchisement and religious persecution. Elizabeth, unbothered, counters with a mini PowerPoint on the divine right of monarchs. The crowd nods politely. It’s all going reasonably well until a surprise segment—”Hot Seat: Literal Edition”—forces Fawkes to sit on an actual warm iron bench while defending the logistics of hiding barrels of gunpowder in a wine cellar.

Final score: 3 passive-aggressive jabs, one off-camera fire extinguisher, and a very tense group hug.

“Overthinking It” with Host: Hamlet

Guest: Sigmund Freud

It’s 2am. The set is candlelit and moody, with excessive velvet and a fog machine that just won’t quit. Hamlet lounges on a fainting couch, skull in hand, sighing heavily. The audience isn’t sure if they’re allowed to clap.

Enter Freud, brushing imaginary lint off his waistcoat and already trying to analyse the lighting.

Topic: “To Be, or To Blame It on Your Mother?”

Hamlet opens with a rambling soliloquy about dreams, betrayal and soup. Freud immediately diagnoses him with at least four syndromes that haven’t been invented yet. They argue over whether Hamlet’s ghostly father is a metaphor or a literal haunting, and whether Oedipus would have made a good therapist.

Tension builds until they both agree that most of life is, in fact, unresolved trauma. A group therapy session ensues with the front row, and someone in the audience bursts into tears. A raven flies across the studio. No one knows where it came from.

Final score: six existential crises, two therapy referrals, and one broken fog machine.

“Cooking with Conquerors” with Host: Attila the Hun

Guest: Gordon Ramsay

The set looks like a medieval campsite crashed into a Michelin-starred kitchen. Attila the Hun, wearing a bloodstained apron that says “Kiss the Conqueror,” welcomes Gordon Ramsay with a handshake that nearly breaks his fingers.

Topic: “Rustic Roasts and Raging Tempers.”

The episode is chaos from the start. Attila insists on roasting an entire boar over an open firepit he lit using only a glare. Ramsay, horrified, insists on precision, seasoning, and not burning down the studio. They argue about garlic ratios and culinary war tactics.

Things escalate when Ramsay criticises Attila’s plating, prompting a minor siege on the sous chef’s station. At one point, Attila challenges Ramsay to a duel with rolling pins. Ramsay responds by swearing creatively in five different languages and assembling a perfect lamb tagine under pressure.

Final score: three broken cooking tools, one scorched camera, and the best braised ox tongue anyone’s ever tasted.

By day, she works as a minion in a government department (no, not one of the cute yellow ones with dungarees). By night, she brings her wicked sense of humour to untypicable.co.uk as an occasional contributor, where she fearlessly tackles life’s nonsense with sharp wit, historical references, and the occasional inappropriate joke.

Kerry has no children (by choice, obviously), but she does have a cat, which is basically the same thing but with more attitude and fewer school runs. When she’s not writing, you’ll probably find her at a historical re-enactment, enthusiastically pretending she’s living in another century—preferably one with fewer emails and better hats.

At what age do we become our parents—and is there any way to stop it? A humourous look at the moment you realise you’ve become your dad or mum, complete with opinions about thermostats and Tupperware.

There are a few cold certainties in life: the sun will rise, the bins will somehow still smell even when empty, and at some point—usually when you least expect it—you will become your parent.

One minute you’re young, vibrant, casually judging the older generation for wearing bootcut jeans and tutting at supermarket queues. The next, you’re standing in your garden, hands on hips, saying “Can’t believe how early it’s getting dark now,” as if you’re auditioning to play your dad in a local am-dram piece titled Weather-Based Observations and How to Make Them Sound Profound.

The transformation is both gradual and shocking. You don’t notice it happening. You don’t get a warning email or a polite notification. You just wake up one day and realise that you now refer to “going out” as “popping out” and get oddly excited about a new bin collection calendar.

When Does It Begin?

The precise age varies, but it generally strikes somewhere between 32 and 46. That’s the sweet spot. It can be triggered by a number of things: your first proper argument about house paint, using the phrase “They don’t make ‘em like they used to,” or developing passionate views on the correct way to load a dishwasher.

It’s not a conscious choice. You’re not sitting down and thinking, “Today I shall become my father and develop an intense opinion about the hedge.” It just… happens. Like puberty, but with more grunting when standing up.

For Men: The Sudden Fatherfication

Fatherhood is not a requirement for this transformation. You could be completely childless, and still find yourself shouting at the thermostat.

Common symptoms include getting visibly angry when lights are left on in unoccupied rooms, saying “Not paying those prices” in response to literally anything, developing a mysterious but all-consuming hat habit, and the strange compulsion to announce every minor task: “I’m just going to put the bins out,” as if narrating a documentary about yourself.

You also begin to say “That’s a decent set of shelves” in DIY stores. Unironically.

It’s not just the words—it’s the stance. One day, you catch yourself looking at a barbecue with quiet satisfaction, your stomach sticking out slightly, and your entire posture reads “I built this with fire.”

For Women: The Mumification Sneaks In

On the flip side, women aren’t immune. Oh no. The signs of becoming your mother are just as insidious, and often sneak in under the guise of practicality.

Symptoms include a Tupperware obsession that borders on legal ownership disputes, developing the ability to communicate full narratives through a single disapproving look, and the transition from “I don’t really like tea” to “Have you tried the Yorkshire Gold? It’s stronger.” Then there’s the uncanny ability to detect draughts in buildings constructed with concrete, and a surprising emotional attachment to a particular supermarket.

You also begin to make noises when sitting down—not out of pain, but as a declaration of personhood.

And at some point, without realising it, you become the sort of person who says “I don’t need to write it down, I’ll remember,” even though you absolutely won’t.

Can It Be Stopped?

In a word: no.

You can fight it for a while. You can stay up late, listen to new music, wear trainers that don’t support your arches. But eventually, biology and social conditioning will win.

You’ll wake up one day, walk into your kitchen, and hear yourself say, “I see we’re down to one Weetabix,” and just like that—it’s over. You’ve crossed the parental Rubicon.

You’ll do things your parents did and, worse, you’ll understand why. You’ll see someone in their twenties and think, “Put a coat on, it’s 4°C,” and you’ll mean it. Sincerely. Without irony.

But Is It All Bad?

Maybe… not.

Becoming your parent means you’ve lived long enough to develop preferences, boundaries, and a deeply irrational hatred for how cushions are arranged in department store display windows.

It means you know what makes you comfortable. You’ve stopped pretending to like loud restaurants. You’ve started keeping a drawer for birthday cards, and you now know where the good biscuits are hidden.

You start saying, “I can’t drink like I used to,” not because you’re ashamed—but because you finally understand that hangovers now last three working days.

Acceptance is Key

The sooner you accept it, the easier it becomes. Lean into it. Buy that multi-pack of thermal socks. Enjoy a Sunday roast and a moan about parking. Embrace your inner parent with the pride of a warrior slipping into his final form.

Just know that somewhere out there, your own children (or the generation beneath you) are watching, waiting, judging. And one day, they too will find themselves in a garden, frowning at the sky and declaring, “Oof, you can feel that change in the air, can’t you?”

And thus, the cycle continues.
