A humorous breakdown of group chat archetypes — from the Ghost and the Shouter to the Lurker — examining how digital friendships survive on chaos, unread messages, and passive aggression.

by Dwight Warner

Group chats are the modern equivalent of shared housing: cramped, chaotic, impossible to leave without causing offence, and haunted by the constant possibility that someone will add a stranger (or a journalist, if you are a US National Security Advisor) without warning.

They are also, in their own glitchy way, the purest expression of friendship. Which is why every group chat, regardless of demographic, platform, or purpose, inevitably evolves the same three archetypes: The Ghost, The Shouter, and The Lurker. Additional subspecies exist, but these three are the keystone species that prevent total collapse.

Let us begin the autopsy.

The Ghost

The Ghost is technically a member of the group, in the same way that a hermit crab is technically part of an ecosystem. They appear once every 14–18 months, usually to ask a logistical question (“What time is the train?”), and then vanish before anyone can reply.

The Ghost reads everything. We know this because their read receipts are visible, their presence is felt, and occasionally they react to a message with a single emoji five days late — a timid flare shot into the night sky.

The Ghost disproves the long‑held assumption that participation is required for belonging. It is not. Observation is sufficient. The Ghost is simply doing ethnography.

The Shouter

Where the Ghost contributes nothing, the Shouter contributes everything, loudly, and usually in one massive block of unpunctuated text arriving during work hours.

The Shouter uses the group chat as a personal broadcast channel. They make announcements. They narrate their commute. They break news stories that are already on the BBC homepage. They send voice notes that no one listens to because voice notes are a communication format invented by sadists.

The Shouter is bafflingly unembarrassed by the concept of attention. They also believe that a group chat is the correct venue for processing emotions in real time, which is both admirable and deeply inconvenient.

The Lurker

The Lurker is not to be confused with The Ghost. The Ghost disappears entirely. The Lurker is always there — silently watching, silently judging, silently screenshotting. Their presence is a low hum in the digital background.

The Lurker occasionally reacts with a thumbs‑up or a crying‑laughing face, which is just enough to remind the group that they still exist. They do not start conversations. They do not escalate conflict. They simply wait for the correct moment to send a single devastating message like:

“Lol.”

The Lurker proves that the line between involvement and surveillance is hazy at best.

Minor Subspecies (Honourable Mentions)

Biodiversity is important, so we must acknowledge the supporting cast:

The Planner – Creates polls, schedules events, produces timetables. Receives zero replies for 72 hours and then one “yeah sounds good” from someone who didn’t read the message.

The Meme Distributor – Contributes nothing but perfectly timed memes. Culturally vital.

The IT Department – Knows how to mute threads, clear cache, export chat history, and back up 2,800 images of dogs and brunch.

The New Recruit – Added without warning. Spends three weeks observing group politics like a junior diplomat before attempting their first meme.

A Field Scenario

To illustrate the dynamic, consider the most volatile sentence known to messaging applications:

“Shall we meet up soon?”

Reactions, in the wild:

Ghost – Seen 08:14, no reply.

Shouter – “YES LET’S DO IT THIS WEEKEND!!!”

Lurker – Nothing.

Planner – “I’ve created a poll with dates and venues. Please respond by Thursday.”

Meme Distributor – Sends GIF of raccoon holding wine.

New Recruit – Types “haha yes” and instantly regrets it.

IT Department – Repairs the poll.

Outcome: no one meets up.

The Diagnostic Test

Which one are you? A simple test:

A message arrives during work hours. It contains 137 unread replies. Your instinct is to:

A) Mark as read and say nothing (Ghost)

B) Reply to every thread individually (Shouter)

C) React with emojis at 11pm (Lurker)

D) Produce a spreadsheet (Planner)

E) Send meme (Meme Distributor)

F) Mute for one year (IT Department)

If none of these apply, you are The New Recruit.

Closing Remarks

Group chats are friendship distilled to its most chaotic form. They contain love, neglect, noise, diplomacy, and a worrying amount of passive aggression. They are sustained by inertia and nostalgia. They endure because logging out feels rude and deleting the chat suggests emotional instability.

Most importantly, they prove that social order persists even in digital environments that should, by all rights, collapse.

We all believe we are the sensible one. In reality, we are someone else’s Shouter.

Hailing originally from London, now living in the sleepy depths of Lincolnshire but claiming an allegiance to the absurd, Dwight has perfected the art of finding the surreal in real life. Whether it’s a spirited rant about the philosophical implications of queueing or a deep dive into why tea tastes better in a mug older than you, his blogs blur the line between the abstract and the everyday.

With an irreverent wit and a penchant for tangents that somehow come full circle, Dwight Warner doesn’t just write; he performs on the page. His humour is both sharp and delightfully nonsensical, like Monty Python met your nosiest neighbour and they decided to co-write a diary.

Known for being gregarious, Dwight is the life of any (real or metaphorical) party, whether he’s deconstructing the existential crisis of mismatched socks or sharing his inexplicable theories about why pigeons are secretly running the economy.

A larger-than-life personality with a laugh as loud as his opinions, Dwight Warner invites readers to step into a world where everything’s slightly askew—and that’s exactly how he likes it.

Board games: the perfect blend of fun, competition, and lifelong grudges. This laugh-out-loud guide shows you how to weaponise Monopoly, betray your allies in Risk, and ruin friendships over obscure Scrabble words — all in the name of victory.

There’s a time and a place for bonding. For laughter. For shared experiences and warm memories. Board game night is not that time.

Board games are not about fun. They’re about power, psychological warfare, and the quiet thrill of watching someone you love unravel over a handful of paper money and a misused “Q” in Scrabble.

If you want to win—and we mean really win—you’ll need to throw kindness, subtlety, and emotional stability straight in the bin. Let’s begin.

1. Choose Your Weapon Wisely

The first step in any campaign of recreational devastation is selecting the right battlefield. Different games, different damage.

Risk – A world conquest simulator dressed as a board game. Watch alliances crumble faster than your opponent’s fragile ego. Ideal for friend groups with unresolved tension and passive-aggressive tendencies.

Monopoly – The ultimate test of capitalist cruelty. Pretend it’s just a light-hearted game about buying property. Actually, it’s about draining every last pound from your opponents while maintaining the smile of a well-fed loan shark.

Scrabble – A game for word lovers. Also, for people who enjoy delivering psychological papercuts with obscure two-letter words. Use “za” and watch your opponent briefly reconsider every life decision that brought them to this moment.

2. Master the Art of Weaponised Rules Lawyering

You don’t need to cheat. You just need to know the rules so intimately that they become a weapon of mass irritation.

“Technically, in Risk, you can’t fortify from South America to Asia unless you control Europe, but sure, go ahead… if we’re playing the casual way.”

In Monopoly, wield the rules like a fiscal blade:

“Actually, any property not bought when landed on is immediately auctioned off. Shall we start the bidding at £1?”

The key is to say it nicely, while radiating the smug energy of someone who once read the instruction manual for fun.

3. Feign Innocence While Executing Ruthless Strategy

Smile. Laugh. Say things like:

“Oh no, I didn’t mean to land there!”
Then bankrupt them anyway.

In Risk, offer a ceasefire. Then invade the moment they turn their attention to Australia.
In Monopoly, pretend to be unsure about a trade—then flip the board with glee when they realise you’ve just completed the orange set and now own three railways and half of central London.

It’s not just strategy. It’s theatre.

[mid_ad]

4. Monopoly: The Quiet Horror of Watching AJ Wright Work the Board. Again.

Every group has someone who’s suspiciously good at one game. The person who doesn’t raise their voice, doesn’t trash talk, doesn’t even roll with particular flair—just slowly, methodically destroys you with devastating efficiency.

That’s untypicable’s very own AJ Wright in Monopoly.

They won’t beg. They won’t bargain. They’ll just sit there in saintly silence, quietly amassing properties like a Victorian landlord on a mission.

The orange set? Gone. The railways? Gone. The utilities? Somehow in their pocket too, and probably turning a better profit than British Gas.

By the time you realise what’s happening, they’ve got a hotel on Strand, and you’re mortgaging Old Kent Road to pay the rent. You try to offer Whitechapel Road and a utility in exchange for not dying inside.
They decline. Gently. Almost apologetically.

It’s like being mugged by someone offering you a cup of tea afterwards.

5. Scrabble: For When You Want to End Friendships via Vocabulary

Scrabble is a game for logophiles. And also for people who enjoy passive-aggressively undermining their friends’ GCSE English grades.

“Qi” on a triple word score? That’s not a win. That’s a hate crime in 17 points.

Best tactics:

Use the word “za” and act like it’s just common knowledge.

Casually ask if they’d like a dictionary. Not because you think the word is wrong, but “just to help.”

Pretend “zoot” is a completely normal British term. If they challenge it and lose? Even better.

Bonus points for saying “You were so close that time!” when someone plays “CAT” for 5 points and cries a little inside.

6. Risk: Start Global. Get Petty.

You don’t really know someone until you’ve watched them throw their entire army into Kamchatka because you betrayed them in South America three turns ago.

Risk teaches geography, sure—but mostly it teaches grudges.

Top tactics:

Form alliances with weaker players. Then destroy them.

Pretend to forget who attacked who first.

Say, “I’m just spreading out” while parking 20 troops on their doorstep.

War crimes? No. Just aggressive friendship management.

7. The Aftermath: Own Your Victory. Smugly.

Once the emotional dust has settled and someone’s flipped the Monopoly board (again), you must embrace your role as The Victor.

Things to say as you collect the final rent or claim the last territory:

“That was so close!” (It wasn’t.)

“I thought you had me at one point!” (They didn’t.)

“Just lucky, I guess.” (You were not.)

Smile. Offer them crisps. Ask if they want to play again. Watch them wrestle with the desire to say yes just so they can destroy you next time.

8. Bonus: Rebuild Friendships with Something Cooperative… Then Ruin That Too

Just when they think it’s safe again—suggest a cooperative game.

Pandemic? “Let’s save the world together!”

Cue you refusing to share information, going rogue with your medic, and watching London burn to the ground while yelling “I HAD A PLAN!”

Friendship partially restored. Then razed to the ground. Perfect.

Winning Is Temporary. Humiliation Is Forever.

You didn’t set out to ruin friendships. But if someone can’t handle you financially dismantling them on Pall Mall, can you really call them a friend?

The mark of true friendship is being able to survive a 9-hour Monopoly session, three betrayal-fuelled Risk invasions, and an “XU” on a double letter score… and still share a bag of crisps at the end.

Equally at home dissecting the absurdities of modern life as he is explaining quantum theory with alarming metaphors, James writes with the wit of someone who knows too much and the irreverence of someone who doesn’t care. His posts are infused with a dark humour that dares you to laugh at the strange, the inexplicable, and the occasionally terrifying truths of the universe—whether it’s the unnerving accuracy of Alexa or the existential menace of wasps.

A figure of mystery with a slightly unsettling edge, James is the sort of bloke who’d explain the meaning of life over a pint, but only after a dramatic pause long enough to make you question your own existence. His wit cuts deep, his insights are sharp, and his ability to make the surreal feel strangely plausible keeps readers coming back for more.

November 22nd marks a significant milestone in cinematic history: the release of Toy Story in 1995. As the first-ever feature-length film made entirely with computer-generated imagery (CGI), Toy Story didn’t just entertain—it revolutionised how movies were made. Let’s take a closer look at why this film is such a game-changer and why it continues to hold a special place in our hearts nearly three decades later.

A Leap Forward in Animation

Before Toy Story, the idea of creating a full-length animated film using only CGI was the stuff of sci-fi. Sure, computers had been used in films before (Jurassic Park, anyone?), but they were just a tool, a small part of a much larger production. Toy Story took the daring step of going fully digital, with no hand-drawn animation or live-action elements in sight.

The result? A movie that wowed audiences with its cutting-edge visuals. Watching Woody and Buzz Lightyear come to life wasn’t just magical—it was groundbreaking. In a world where animation had been dominated by Disney classics like The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast, Toy Story opened the door for an entirely new era of filmmaking.

Why It Worked: A Story with Heart

Revolutionary technology might have got people into cinemas, but it was Toy Story’s heartwarming story and unforgettable characters that kept them coming back. At its core, Toy Story isn’t about CGI—it’s about friendship, loyalty, and what it means to grow up.

Woody, the charmingly insecure cowboy voiced by Tom Hanks, and Buzz Lightyear, the delusional space ranger played by Tim Allen, captured audiences with their hilarious rivalry-turned-bond. The story of toys coming to life when humans aren’t looking was both wildly imaginative and deeply relatable. After all, who hasn’t wondered what their toys get up to when they’re not around?

A Cultural Phenomenon

The release of Toy Story wasn’t just a win for animation—it was the start of a cultural phenomenon. The film spawned three sequels (each one as beloved as the last), merchandise that flew off shelves faster than Buzz could yell, “To infinity and beyond!” and a theme park presence that continues to thrill kids and adults alike.

The movie’s impact extends beyond the screen. Who doesn’t know someone who’s used “You’ve got a friend in me” as their go-to karaoke song? And let’s be honest—whether you’re six or sixty, the sight of Woody tipping his hat with “Howdy, partner” is guaranteed to bring a smile.

What Toy Story Did for Pixar (and Us)

Pixar Animation Studios, the team behind Toy Story, went from a scrappy upstart to the gold standard of animated storytelling. Without Toy Story, there might be no Finding Nemo, Up, or Inside Out. Pixar’s commitment to combining technological innovation with deeply human stories started here, and it’s a legacy that continues to shape the industry.

But Toy Story didn’t just change filmmaking—it changed us. It reminded us of the joy of imagination, the bittersweetness of growing up, and the importance of friendship. Whether you’re Andy saying goodbye to his toys or Buzz learning he’s “just a toy” but still a hero, the film captures moments that resonate with everyone.

A British Take: Why We Still Love It

For Brits, Toy Story has always had a certain charm. Sure, it’s set in suburban America, but the themes are universal. From the cheeky banter between Woody and Buzz to the endearing awkwardness of Rex, the film speaks a language we all understand: humour, heart, and a touch of nostalgia.

Plus, the thought of Sid’s terrifying bedroom experiments with mutant toys is enough to make any Brit remember the time they accidentally decapitated a Barbie and had to pretend it was “art.”

Celebrating Toy Story

As we celebrate the anniversary of Toy Story on November 22nd, it’s worth taking a moment to appreciate what the film represents: a leap of faith, a love of storytelling, and a reminder that even the most ordinary things—like a toy cowboy or a plastic spaceman—can be extraordinary.

So, whether you’re rewatching the film for the hundredth time or just humming “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” under your breath, let’s raise a glass (or a mug of tea, British style) to Toy Story. It’s more than a movie—it’s a timeless classic that, much like Buzz Lightyear, will never stop reaching for infinity and beyond.

A tech-savvy PhD student hailing from South Yorkshire but now stationed in the flatlands of Lincolnshire, AJ writes with an irreverence that strips back the layers of academia, social norms, and the absurdities of daily life to reveal the humour lurking beneath.

As an autistic thinker, AJ’s perspective offers readers a rare blend of precision, curiosity, and wit. From dissecting the unspoken rituals of academia—like the silent war over the office thermostat—to exploring the sociology of “neurotypical small talk” and the bizarre hierarchies of campus coffee queues, AJ turns the ordinary into something both profound and hilarious.

AJ’s unassuming nature belies the sharpness of their commentary, which dives deep into the intersections of neurodiversity, tech culture, and the often-overlooked quirks of human behaviour. Whether questioning why university bureaucracy feels designed by Kafka or crafting surreal parodies of academic peer reviews, AJ writes with a balance of quiet intensity and playful absurdity that keeps readers coming back for more.

For those seeking a blog that is equal parts insightful, irreverent, and refreshingly authentic, AJ Wright provides a unique perspective that celebrates neurodiversity while poking fun at the peculiarities of the world we live in. Also a contributor at Thinking Sociologically.
