What if Inspector Morse swapped Oxford’s dreaming spires for Sheffield Polytechnic’s brutalist breeze-blocks? This satirical rewrite reimagines the iconic detective solving petty crimes, battling chip pan conspiracies, and brooding over pints of bitter in South Yorkshire. Less Wagner, more Status Quo.

Forget the dreaming spires, dusty dons, and Latin-quoting lords of Oxford. Let us imagine a world where Inspector Morse didn’t attend the hallowed halls of one of Britain’s most elite institutions, but instead honed his craft at Sheffield Polytechnic, circa 1972. Welcome to an alternate universe where murders are solved not with opera and obscure crossword clues, but with Northern grit, a battered Ford Cortina, and a working knowledge of kettle repair and how to fend off a dodgy landlord with a strongly worded letter.

Setting the Scene: Morse, Reimagined

Gone are the cloisters and the cobbled lanes of Oxford. Enter: Sheffield in the ’70s. Concrete brutalism as far as the eye can see, fog rolling in from the Peak District, and a pervasive smell of chip fat and ambition.

Morse’s flat is a converted bedsit above a Kwik Save, where the ceiling occasionally leaks and the neighbour plays darts at 3am. His local is the King Edward Working Men’s Club, where the quiz night ends in fisticuffs and the jukebox skips if you don’t hit it with a spanner. The landlord, Big Trev, serves pints with a side of political incorrectness and once threatened to bar Morse for asking if they had anything ‘hoppy’ on tap.

The opening credits feature a moody synthesiser version of On Ilkla Moor Baht ‘at, over grainy shots of Sheffield’s skyline, intercut with a steel mill pouring molten metal, a lost ferret on a canal path, and Morse looking broodingly at a cracked mug of Tetley’s.

The Poly Years

Instead of lounging through tutorials in ancient libraries, Morse studied Applied Criminology and Transport Planning in a breeze-block lecture hall next to a Wimpy. The polytechnic’s most advanced technology was a projector that wheezed like a pit pony and once caught fire during a lecture on road signage.

He paid his way through uni with a part-time job at a steel foundry, which left him with a permanent disdain for anyone who called a 9am lecture “early.” He missed his third-year exam after getting stuck behind a slow-moving milk float on the A61 and once submitted coursework late because his flatmate had used the typewriter ribbon to fix his motorbike.

His dissertation? “Socioeconomic Profiling in South Yorkshire Petty Crime”—a masterful 14,000-word rant about dog theft, ferret-related assaults, and illegal pigeon racing. It received a First and a free pint from the Dean, who ran a greyhound on weekends.

Cultural Differences: Oxford vs Sheffield Poly

At Oxford, Morse was imagined as a brooding intellectual with a penchant for Wagner and crossword puzzles, gliding through life in a polished Jaguar Mark 2 and sipping floral ales in mahogany-clad pubs where everyone spoke in riddles and wore tweed without irony. Conversations revolved around metaphysics, literary allusions, and whether the port was a bit corked this evening.

But in the Sheffield Polyverse, Morse’s music taste skews more Status Quo than Schubert. His car of choice? A 1971 Ford Cortina that smells permanently of damp carpets and suspicious takeaways. Where Oxford Morse might quote Nietzsche, Sheffield Morse swears by the sayings of his Uncle Les: “People are scum, lad. Trust no one with clean shoes.”

He doesn’t sip ale with floral notes; he downs bitter from a straight glass, preferably served lukewarm and with minimal head. Dinner isn’t a candlelit affair with dons—it’s a spam bap eaten behind the bins of the student union, ideally with a pickled egg on the side. Black-tie events are swapped for ska nights at the student bar, where he only gets in free if he promises not to dance.

Instead of discussing continental philosophy, he argues passionately about the offside rule with Baz from Catering. His idea of fine culture is a decent meat raffle and a working dartboard. And rather than haunting bookshops for out-of-print poetry, Morse is more likely to be seen in Netto, comparing tinned meat brands.

Morse’s Northern Mysteries

Without the Latin puns and corrupt dons, Morse’s cases take on a different flavour:

The Case of the Stolen Pigeon Lofts: A turf war between rival pigeon fanciers turns deadly after someone’s champion bird goes missing. There’s a feather trail to follow… and it leads to the allotments.

Murder at the Chip Pan Factory: The night shift turns sinister. Was it sabotage, or just Brian from Accounts being an arse again? Spud thinks it was Sandra from HR. Morse suspects a disgruntled line manager and a dodgy vat of beef dripping.

The Curse of the Do-It-Yourself Conservatory: A man is found trapped beneath 400kg of poorly installed double glazing. Accident or revenge from the local council’s planning committee? A taped copy of Ground Force might hold the answer.

Death by Henderson’s Relish: A bottle swapped. A stew sabotaged. A family recipe turned fatal. Only Morse can navigate the etiquette of Yorkshire condiments and unpick this culinary crime.

The Disappearance of Elvis Barry: A local impersonator goes missing just before his big night at Mecca Bingo. Was it jealousy? Sabotage? Or simply a dodgy van with no MOT?

Clues are often scrawled on betting slips, chip shop wrappers, or overheard at the bookies while pretending to read the racing form. Morse solves crimes through a mix of instinct, pint-fuelled deduction, and a dangerously intimate knowledge of South Yorkshire’s bus timetables and the social code of laundrette queueing.

Inspector Lewis? No, Meet Spud

Morse’s sidekick is no longer the gentle, loyal Lewis. Meet Spud—a gobby lad from Barnsley with a thick accent, a fondness for pork scratchings, and a part-time criminology diploma from the Open University. He lives with his nan, drives a rusting Vauxhall Viva, and once broke up a fight in Netto using only a bag of frozen peas and a withering look.

Spud has a nose for nonsense, a sixth sense for stolen mobility scooters, and a deep distrust of any crime scene that smells of Fabreeze. He once tried to arrest a goose for disturbing the peace and has strong opinions about which Greggs in Sheffield makes the best sausage roll (“not the one near the Moor, they burn ’em”).

Together, Morse and Spud represent a new kind of policing: less opera, more shouting at teenagers on mopeds, and the occasional off-the-books interrogation over a game of darts and two pints of John Smith’s.

Would He Still Be Morse?

Absolutely. Still melancholic, still uncomfortable with emotions, and still solving murders with a weary sigh and the occasional existential monologue. Only now, he broods while sat on a broken park bench, drinking lukewarm tea from a Thermos, watching a pigeon walk into a newsagent like it owns the place.

Instead of uncovering dark secrets in elite colleges, he’s investigating housing estate drama, under-the-table chip shop dealings, and the mysterious disappearance of a garden gnome called Terry. His music collection may be 100% less Wagner, but his cassette labelled “MIXTAPE 1980: MOURNFUL BANGERS” still gets regular use.

He doesn’t own a crossword dictionary. He is the crossword dictionary—just with more chip grease.

Final Thoughts

Would Morse still have become a great detective without Oxford’s polish? Probably. But he’d also know how to fix a boiler, spot a forged bus pass at fifty paces, and tell you which local has the best darts team. He’d understand that justice isn’t just found in courtrooms and college chapels, but also in backstreet boozers, launderettes, and snooker halls.

And isn’t that… just a bit more useful?

Next week: Poirot relocates to Wakefield and opens a second-hand suit shop. Maybe.

A tech-savvy PhD student hailing from South Yorkshire but now stationed in the flatlands of Lincolnshire, AJ writes with an irreverence that strips back the layers of academia, social norms, and the absurdities of daily life to reveal the humour lurking beneath.

As an autistic thinker, AJ’s perspective offers readers a rare blend of precision, curiosity, and wit. From dissecting the unspoken rituals of academia—like the silent war over the office thermostat—to exploring the sociology of “neurotypical small talk” and the bizarre hierarchies of campus coffee queues, AJ turns the ordinary into something both profound and hilarious.

AJ’s unassuming nature belies the sharpness of their commentary, which dives deep into the intersections of neurodiversity, tech culture, and the often-overlooked quirks of human behaviour. Whether questioning why university bureaucracy feels designed by Kafka or crafting surreal parodies of academic peer reviews, AJ writes with a balance of quiet intensity and playful absurdity that keeps readers coming back for more.

For those seeking a blog that is equal parts insightful, irreverent, and refreshingly authentic, AJ Wright provides a unique perspective that celebrates neurodiversity while poking fun at the peculiarities of the world we live in. Also a contributor at Thinking Sociologically.

What happens when British TV and the prison system collide? A darkly satirical look at the rise of The Running Man: UK.

Once we watched Bake Off. Now we’re watching convicted criminals sprint through obstacle courses for a chance at freedom. This is how the UK quietly created the world’s first state-sanctioned bloodsport on prime-time television.

Saturday Night and the Slow Slide into Madness

There was a time when British Saturday night television was a comforting lullaby. A twinkling blend of sequins, baked goods, and pre-watershed innuendo. Audiences tuned in for ballroom foxtrots and cake disasters. Family-friendly formats where the worst that could happen was a soggy bottom or an awkward samba. Our televisions were hearths, not gladiatorial arenas.

Meanwhile, the criminal justice system sat at a bureaucratic distance — shrouded in institutional language, ministerial white papers, and annual reports that few outside Whitehall pretended to read. What happened behind the prison walls was rarely visible to the public, and rarely considered fodder for entertainment.

But the gap between the nation’s favourite distraction and its greatest civic failure has been narrowing. Quietly, and with little resistance, two of Britain’s most beleaguered institutions — television and the prison estate — have found each other. And the results are disturbing.

Part I: Television’s Descent from Public Service to Public Spectacle

The warning signs were there. Public service broadcasting has, for years, been on a slow cultural decline. Where once television was trusted to inform and educate, it has more recently become an arms race of engineered outrage, desperate virality, and what producers call “emotional jeopardy”.

Bake Off became Mean Off. MasterChef mutated into something that felt closer to Hunger Games with hummus. Even quiz shows now require contestants to cry about their personal trauma before answering a question about 17th-century Danish monarchs.

Streaming services conditioned audiences to expect spectacle, and advertisers began to demand engagement metrics instead of ratings. Slowly, audiences were retrained — not to watch, but to vote. Swipe. Eliminate. Participation became predation, and content became competition.

Entertainment became punishment. And punishment, in turn, began to look like entertainment.

Part II: Prisons in Perpetual Crisis

At the same time, the UK’s prison system reached a state of crisis so entrenched it no longer made headlines.

Overcrowding, chronic understaffing, privatised contracts failing basic standards — all of it compounded by a relentless tough-on-crime political culture and the inability to build new facilities fast enough to keep up with sentencing rates. The system didn’t bend. It broke.

By the end of 2024, the prison population stood at 94,000 — nearly 15,000 above the system’s recommended safe capacity. Prisoners were being held in police cells, army barracks, even ferries. Emergency early releases became routine. Ministers spoke of “innovative justice delivery models”. A euphemism, it turns out, for what came next.

The prison estate could no longer contain the people it was built to punish. And the entertainment industry needed something new to sell.

When Policy Met Programming

Justice Prime began as a pilot. A privately-funded rehabilitation initiative, trialled under the vaguely titled Ministry of Justice “Transparency Through Engagement” scheme. The public were invited to observe a group of non-violent offenders undergoing character-building challenges — obstacle courses, escape rooms, team-building exercises filmed in a disused shopping centre in Doncaster. It was presented as therapy with cameras. Lightly edited. Tastefully scored.

But the numbers spoke louder than the mission statement. The pilot episode of The Running Man: UK drew 7.2 million viewers in its first broadcast. Within a fortnight, it had a merchandise line, two Ofcom investigations, and its own subreddit.

By the second series, the stakes had escalated. The contestants were no longer “offenders” but “risk-takers”. The challenges were no longer metaphorical. They included dogs. Knives. Public votes. Flamethrowers, briefly, before health and safety intervened.

The Bloodsport Begins

The language changed. “Redemption Points” replaced prison credits. “Performance-based rehabilitation” replaced parole. A GoFundMe was launched for one contestant’s funeral, and raised more than £500,000 in 48 hours. Commentators called it “a moving example of public support”. They did not mention that his death was sponsored by the soft drink Monster Mango.

Every episode, viewers vote for who should be “given a chance” and who should be “removed from the zone”. The euphemisms are paper-thin. The show’s highest-rated segment remains Series 3, Episode 5 — in which a convicted pickpocket from Romford was forced to navigate a shopping centre filled with former TV Gladiators, armed with foam batons and legal immunity. He survived for 22 minutes. ITV described it as “the most thrilling rehabilitation outcome ever televised.”

Critics were slow to respond. At first, it seemed too ridiculous to condemn. Then, too popular. By the time the Law Society released a statement calling the show “morally corrosive and legally ambiguous,” it had already been optioned for a US adaptation and signed a £40m tie-in with Domino’s Pizza.

The show’s defenders, including several MPs and one YouTube motivational speaker, insist the format offers prisoners a chance to “rewrite their story” and earn back public trust “through action, not entitlement.” There are vague promises of therapy, training, job offers — all unverified.

What is verifiable is the ratings.

When Punishment Became Content

The Running Man: UK now consistently outperforms Strictly Come Dancing. A spin-off, Bake or Break, debuts this autumn. Each contestant gets a GoPro, a branded protein bar, and a signed waiver longer than the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement.

At the end of each episode, the host — a former radio DJ named Maxx Power (with two x’s) — turns to the camera and delivers the show’s catchphrase:

“When the prisons are full and the ratings are high… somebody’s got to run.”

There is a pause. Then the lights dim. A siren wails. And someone, somewhere, is let loose into the zone.

We are no longer watching fiction.
We are watching policy.
And it has never been more entertaining.

What happened to the great British sitcom? From Fawlty Towers to Only Fools and Horses, classic comedies once ruled TV. Now, we’re left with dramedies and awkward silences. Is there hope for a comeback?

Once upon a time, the British sitcom was king. It ruled our screens with sharp wit, unforgettable characters, and the kind of catchphrases that got shouted in playgrounds and pubs alike. There was a time when you couldn’t go a week without hearing someone impersonate Del Boy falling through the bar, Basil Fawlty thrashing his car with a tree branch, or Victor Meldrew declaring, “I don’t believe it!”

But somewhere along the way, the magic started to fade. British sitcoms, once the gold standard of comedy, have been replaced by bland, factory-produced “dramedies”, or worse, simply disappeared altogether. So, what happened? Where did the great sitcoms go? And why do so many of us find ourselves re-watching 40-year-old episodes of Dad’s Army instead of anything new?

Golden Days of the British Sitcom: When TV Was Actually Funny

The heyday of the British sitcom was a glorious mix of genius writing, memorable performances, and an unflinching dedication to getting as many laughs as possible. The 70s, 80s, and 90s were stuffed with classics that defined British humour—a blend of sarcasm, farce, and the absolute refusal to take anything too seriously.

We had Only Fools and Horses, the undisputed heavyweight champion of heartwarming comedy, proving that even a dodgy market trader in a sheepskin coat could make the entire nation laugh and cry in the same episode. There was Fawlty Towers, a masterclass in escalating chaos, where Basil Fawlty’s ongoing war with his own hotel guests felt like watching a man slowly unravel over 12 perfect episodes.

Then came Blackadder, which dared to make history both educational and deeply sarcastic, Porridge, proving that even prison could be funny, and The Vicar of Dibley, where Dawn French somehow made rural parish life more entertaining than any soap opera ever could.

And let’s not forget Father Ted, the ultimate example of taking something deeply mundane (priests in a house on a tiny Irish island) and making it absolutely, unforgettably hilarious.

Each of these shows had one thing in common—they were built on strong characters, razor-sharp writing, and the confidence to be utterly ridiculous when necessary.

Where Did It All Go Wrong?

Then, something changed. The traditional British sitcom started to disappear. Instead of big laughs, unforgettable moments, and scenes that made audiences howl, we were handed a new generation of comedies that felt like they were trying to win awards rather than make people laugh.

There was a shift from proper sitcoms to the dreaded “dramedy”—comedies that insist on being half drama, half funny, but end up being neither. Characters stopped being larger than life, and instead became miserable people having miserable conversations in a dimly lit kitchen.

Of course, there have been a few modern successes—The Office, Peep Show, and The IT Crowd proved that newer sitcoms could still be great—but for every one of these, there are dozens of self-indulgent, low-energy comedies where people just mumble at each other for 30 minutes.

But what we’re still waiting for is the next big sitcom—something sharp, clever, and utterly original. A show that captures the spirit of British humour without drowning in forced sentimentality or becoming a 12-episode exercise in awkward silences and unearned melancholy.

The Americanisation of British Comedy

Part of the problem is that British TV started looking to America for inspiration—which is great for dramas, but absolutely disastrous for sitcoms.

American sitcoms, for all their strengths, are structured differently. They rely on shiny sets, snappy one-liners, and an almost terrifying level of optimism. Shows like Friends, The Big Bang Theory, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine have their place, but they lack the cynicism and chaos that make British sitcoms so unique.

And then there’s the laugh track—the artificial, soul-draining, utterly unbearable canned laughter that American sitcoms insist on blasting at full volume. British sitcoms never needed this. We trusted the audience to know when to laugh. Fawlty Towers didn’t need a recorded voice shouting “HAHAHA” every five seconds. Only Fools and Horses knew it could land a joke without force-feeding it to the audience like an overenthusiastic pantomime performer.

When British sitcoms try to imitate the American formula, it never quite works. We lose the dry sarcasm, the eccentric characters, and the gloriously unglamorous settings that made British comedy special in the first place.

Can the Great British Sitcom Be Saved?

The good news is that comedy never truly dies—it just hides for a while.

There’s still hope that the next great sitcom is out there, waiting to be made. But for that to happen, we need to ditch the dramedy, stop trying to impress critics, and go back to what made British sitcoms great in the first place—big characters, big laughs, and the absolute refusal to take anything too seriously.

Because if we don’t, we’ll all be watching the same old re-runs forever, and while Del Boy falling through the bar will always be funny, it would be nice to have something new to laugh at once in a while.

With a mind as sharp as a stiletto and a penchant for science-tinged musings, James blends the surreal with the everyday, crafting blogs that feel like the lovechild of a physics textbook and a fever dream.

Equally at home dissecting the absurdities of modern life as he is explaining quantum theory with alarming metaphors, James writes with the wit of someone who knows too much and the irreverence of someone who doesn’t care. His posts are infused with a dark humour that dares you to laugh at the strange, the inexplicable, and the occasionally terrifying truths of the universe—whether it’s the unnerving accuracy of Alexa or the existential menace of wasps.

A figure of mystery with a slightly unsettling edge, James is the sort of bloke who’d explain the meaning of life over a pint, but only after a dramatic pause long enough to make you question your own existence. His wit cuts deep, his insights are sharp, and his ability to make the surreal feel strangely plausible keeps readers coming back for more.

James Martin does not cook—he wages war on arteries. Watching him in action is like witnessing a man possessed by a dairy-based deity, one whose only commandment is “Thou shalt add more butter.”

For years, the beloved Yorkshire chef has graced our screens, charming the nation with his laid-back approach to cooking and his absolute refusal to acknowledge that butter is meant to be used in moderation. To James Martin, moderation is for the weak. Butter is not an ingredient; it is the foundation of civilisation itself.

But how did we get here? Why is James Martin so devoted to using truly alarming amounts of butter? Is it a branding decision? A personal challenge? Or does he simply know something about dairy that the rest of us don’t?

Let’s investigate.

A Man, A Plan, A Block of Butter

It all began innocently enough. James Martin, like any respectable chef, knew that butter makes everything taste better. A little in your mashed potatoes, a bit to finish off a sauce—fair enough.

Then something shifted.

Somewhere along the line, a small knob of butter became half a block, and half a block became an entire dairy farm’s output for the week. Dishes that could have survived perfectly well with a tablespoon of butter were now being drowned in it, glistening pools of golden excess covering every available surface. Is James a secret agent working for Lurpak?

A James Martin recipe does not ask if you’d like to add butter. It asks how much you’re willing to risk. I honestly once saw him put an entire block in a recipe for one croissant. One.

The Evidence: A Buttery Crime Scene

Let’s look at just a few of the incidents that confirm James Martin’s butter obsession:

The “Just a Little Butter” Incident – While making scrambled eggs on Saturday Kitchen, James reached for the butter and casually lobbed in half a pack. The studio audience gasped. The eggs wept in cholesterol-based fear.

The Roast Potato Scandal – Many chefs swear by a bit of duck fat for the perfect crispy spud. James Martin, an agent of chaos, suggests roasting them in nothing but butter. That’s not roasting, James. That’s deep frying in pure dairy.

The “Everything Needs a Butter Glaze” Theory – Bread? Butter glaze. Steak? Butter glaze. Vegetables? Boil them, drain them, then butter-glaze them like you’re polishing a luxury car.

The “Drink Your Butter” Moment – James Martin has openly recommended stirring butter into coffee. This is no longer cooking. This is alchemy.

The Time He Fried a Sandwich… in Butter – In perhaps his most unapologetically James Martin moment, he once fried a sandwich in butter, then buttered the outside for good measure. At this point, I suspect he bathes in the stuff.

Why Is He Like This?

So what drives a man to this level of dairy-based debauchery? A few theories:

1. He’s a Yorkshireman, and Yorkshiremen Fear No Calories

Anyone from Yorkshire will tell you that food is not about nutrition; it’s about pleasure and fortification against the cold northern winds.

Yorkshire puddings? Better with butter.

Pie and mash? Needs a bit of butter on top, love.

Tea? Would probably be improved with butter.

James Martin simply took the natural Yorkshire philosophy and turned it up to 11.

2. He’s Rebelling Against Clean Eating Trends

In an age of avocado smoothies and quinoa air salads, James Martin stands alone, a warrior for the old ways.

While others count macros, James measures butter in bricks.

When other chefs drizzle olive oil, James is building a butter-based swimming pool.

3. It’s a Statement Against the French

James trained in France, where butter is worshipped but still used with a degree of restraint.

Perhaps, after years of French culinary discipline, he snapped and declared, “You think you lot love butter? Watch this.”

And now, here we are.

The Real Question: Is He Actually… Right?

For all the shocked gasps and Twitter outrage, let’s be honest: his food always looks incredible.

Have you ever had butter-soaked roast potatoes? Life-changing.

Steak finished with a slab of butter melting into it? Transcendent.

A sandwich fried in butter? Who among us hasn’t at least been tempted?

The truth is, James Martin’s reckless abandon with butter isn’t insanity. It’s commitment to flavour above all else. He knows that deep down, we all want to live in a world where butter is limitless and consequences don’t exist.

Is There Such a Thing as Too Much Butter?

James Martin does not ask himself this question. He knows the answer.

It’s no.

And whether you’re horrified or deeply impressed by his approach, one thing is certain: he’s having a far better time than the people eating plain grilled chicken and pretending they enjoy it.

So the next time you see James Martin casually dropping half a block of butter into a pan while laughing in the face of medical science, take a moment to admire the sheer audacity.

And then, do as James would do.

Add more butter.

Ant and Dec are everywhere, Stephen Mulhern will host anything, but who’s the most annoying? A satirical look at Britain’s busiest TV hosts and their relentless grip on our screens.

In the wild world of British television, three figures reign supreme: Ant and Dec, the cheeky Geordie duo with an uncanny ability to be on everything, and Stephen Mulhern, the man who seems to have a standing agreement to host any show ITV dreams up. Between them, they dominate our screens, filling every available timeslot with laughter, banter, and an overwhelming sense of “not them again!”

But the question must be asked: who is the most annoying? Is it Ant and Dec, the self-appointed monarchs of Saturday night television? Or is it Stephen Mulhern, the relentless jester who’s happy to present anything that comes with a glitter cannon? Let’s take a closer look at these titans of ubiquity to determine who truly deserves the title of Britain’s Most Annoying TV Host.

Ant and Dec: ITV’s Golden Boys

Let’s start with the Geordie duo themselves. Anthony McPartlin and Declan Donnelly—Ant and Dec to everyone who’s ever owned a telly—have been staples of British entertainment since the Byker Grove days. They’ve charmed their way from a questionable pop career (PJ & Duncan, anyone?) to becoming the undisputed kings of ITV primetime.

Why they’re everywhere:
If there’s a primetime TV show with a studio audience, Ant and Dec are hosting it. From Saturday Night Takeaway to I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! and Britain’s Got Talent, they’re the face of feel-good television. Producers love them because they guarantee ratings—and, to be fair, they’re good at what they do. They can banter, they can laugh at themselves, and they know how to keep things moving without making it too awkward.

Why they’re annoying:
But here’s the thing: they’re always there. No matter what ITV show you tune into, their grinning faces are staring back at you. It’s like they’ve signed a blood pact with the network to never let anyone else have a go. And while their cheeky schoolboy act was endearing for a while, it’s started to wear thin. How many times can we watch them mock Simon Cowell’s trousers or prank a celebrity into thinking they’re on fire? The jokes are starting to feel less like banter and more like white noise.

And don’t even get me started on their catchphrases. “Let’s get ready to rumble!” was funny in 1994, lads. It’s 2025 now.

Stephen Mulhern: The Human Jack-in-the-Box

Then we have Stephen Mulhern, the ever-enthusiastic wildcard of British TV. If Ant and Dec are the polished princes of primetime, Mulhern is the court jester, turning up wherever there’s a paycheck and a camera. He’s the face of Catchphrase, the star of In for a Penny, and the bloke who’ll happily host the opening of an envelope if given half a chance.

Why he’s everywhere:
Unlike Ant and Dec, who seem to pick their projects carefully (or at least monopolise the big ones), Mulhern’s strategy is more scattergun. He’ll take anything. Game shows, talent show spin-offs, kids’ TV—if it needs a presenter, he’s your man. There’s a sort of admirable hustle to it, but it also means there’s no escape. Wherever you look, there he is, grinning like he’s just won the lottery.

Why he’s annoying:
Mulhern’s energy levels are both his greatest strength and his biggest flaw. He’s always on, always ready with a pun or a magic trick, and it can be exhausting to watch. He leans heavily on dad jokes and slapstick, which, while entertaining in small doses, quickly becomes grating when it’s all he seems to offer.

And let’s talk about his willingness to embrace cringe. From dressing up as a giant sausage on In for a Penny to awkwardly flirting with contestants on Catchphrase, Mulhern has no shame—and that’s part of the problem. There’s a fine line between charmingly self-deprecating and unrelentingly annoying, and he crosses it regularly.

Why Are They Ubiquitous?

The reason Ant, Dec, and Mulhern are everywhere boils down to one thing: they’re safe bets. Ant and Dec guarantee family-friendly fun with a touch of cheekiness, while Mulhern is a low-risk option who can slot into any format. Producers love them because they’re dependable, and audiences (mostly) tolerate them because they’re familiar.

But there’s a darker truth here: we, the viewers, are complicit. By continuing to watch their shows, laugh at their jokes, and vote for them to win TV Presenter of the Year for the millionth time, we’re enabling their ubiquity. It’s a vicious cycle, and we only have ourselves to blame.

The Annoyance Olympics

Let’s pit them head-to-head in a battle of irritation to see who reigns supreme:

Round 1: Ubiquity

Ant and Dec are on every big ITV show.

Stephen Mulhern is on everything else—and probably some shows you’ve never heard of.
Winner: Ant and Dec, by sheer volume.

Round 2: Recycled Jokes

Ant and Dec’s “cheeky Geordie lads” act hasn’t evolved much since 1998.

Mulhern’s dad jokes are relentless but occasionally unexpected.
Winner: Ant and Dec. Familiarity breeds contempt.

Round 3: Relatability

Ant and Dec are polished and professional to a fault.

Mulhern feels like the awkward bloke at the pub who somehow stumbled into showbiz.
Winner: Mulhern, for being unapologetically cringe.

What Would Happen If They Teamed Up?

The thought of Ant, Dec, and Stephen Mulhern co-hosting a show is both thrilling and terrifying. On one hand, it would be peak British television chaos. On the other, it might be too much personality for a single screen. Who would interrupt whom? Would Mulhern out-cringe Ant and Dec, or would they overpower him with sheer cheeky energy? It’s a tantalising (and slightly horrifying) prospect.

Conclusion: Who’s the Most Annoying?

In the end, it’s a close race, but Ant and Dec take the crown. Their omnipresence, coupled with their increasingly tired act, tips the scales. That said, Stephen Mulhern deserves an honourable mention for his tireless dedication to being just a bit too much.

Love them or loathe them, Ant, Dec, and Mulhern are here to stay. Until, of course, ITV finds a new Geordie magician willing to work for a never-ending supply of glitter and questionable banter.

Hailing originally from London, now living in the sleepy depths of Lincolnshire but claiming an allegiance to the absurd, Dwight has perfected the art of finding the surreal in real life. Whether it’s a spirited rant about the philosophical implications of queueing or a deep dive into why tea tastes better in a mug older than you, his blogs blur the line between the abstract and the everyday.

With an irreverent wit and a penchant for tangents that somehow come full circle, Dwight Warner doesn’t just write; he performs on the page. His humour is both sharp and delightfully nonsensical, like Monty Python met your nosiest neighbour and they decided to co-write a diary.

Known for being gregarious, Dwight is the life of any (real or metaphorical) party, whether he’s deconstructing the existential crisis of mismatched socks or sharing his inexplicable theories about why pigeons are secretly running the economy.

A larger-than-life personality with a laugh as loud as his opinions, Dwight Warner invites readers to step into a world where everything’s slightly askew—and that’s exactly how he likes it.

It’s the ultimate question of endurance: would you rather sit through an episode of Mrs Brown’s Boys or endure the sharp, merciless tug of having a tooth pulled? Let’s break it down scientifically (or at least, sarcastically) to determine which experience is the most unbearable.

Round 1: Pain Levels

Teeth Pulled:
Having a tooth yanked from your skull without anaesthetic sounds like medieval torture, but modern dentistry makes the experience relatively pain-free. Sure, there’s discomfort, a bit of pressure, and the unsettling crack of tooth roots being prised from your gums—but at least it’s quick.

Mrs Brown’s Boys:
The pain is subtler but far more insidious. It starts with the laugh track blaring over Brendan O’Carroll’s predictable punchlines. Then comes the cringe as you realise the jokes are mainly recycled innuendos and unfunny slapstick. The real agony, however, is existential: Why is this so popular? Is this what comedy has become?

Winner: Mrs Brown’s Boys. Dental pain is fleeting; the memory of Mrs Brown lingers far longer.

Round 2: Humiliation Factor

Teeth Pulled:
There’s a certain vulnerability in having someone stare into your open mouth while wielding sharp tools. But let’s be honest: everyone has been there, and there’s no shame in taking care of your oral health.

Mrs Brown’s Boys:
Watching Mrs Brown’s Boys feels like a confession of bad taste. If someone catches you enjoying it (or even tolerating it), there’s no coming back. It’s the TV equivalent of unironically wearing Crocs to a black-tie event.

Winner: Mrs Brown’s Boys. At least at the dentist, no one’s judging your sense of humour.

Round 3: Lasting Impact

Teeth Pulled:
Once it’s over, it’s over. You get a bit of swelling, maybe some painkillers, and in a few days, you’re back to normal. The worst-case scenario? A slightly annoying gap in your smile.

Mrs Brown’s Boys:
The damage here is psychological. You’ll replay certain jokes in your mind—not because they were funny, but because they weren’t. You’ll hear the canned laughter echoing in your nightmares. If you’re unlucky, someone might gift you a Mrs Brown’s Boys DVD box set next Christmas, prolonging the torment.

Winner: Mrs Brown’s Boys. Tooth extractions heal; comedic trauma does not.

Round 4: Cost of the Experience

Teeth Pulled:
Dental work isn’t cheap, especially in the UK where NHS waiting lists are longer than the queue at Greggs on a Friday. Private treatment could set you back hundreds.

Mrs Brown’s Boys:
Watching Mrs Brown’s Boys costs your dignity, and in some cases, your soul. Worse still, you’re inadvertently contributing to its viewing figures, encouraging producers to make another series.

Winner: Teeth pulled. At least dentists charge for a service people actually need.

The Verdict

While having your teeth pulled is no picnic, it’s a necessary evil that ultimately improves your quality of life. Watching Mrs Brown’s Boys, on the other hand, offers no such benefits. It’s an exercise in endurance with no reward, leaving you questioning your choices, your sense of humour, and possibly humanity itself.

Final Winner: Mrs Brown’s Boys—by being unquestionably worse.

Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol is a timeless classic, filled with moral lessons, poignant reflections, and festive cheer. Now, imagine all of that being completely derailed by Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May stepping into the roles of the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future. What follows is a scripted journey where everything goes hilariously wrong, Scrooge learns absolutely nothing, and the spirit of Christmas takes a back seat to chaos.

A Christmas Carol: The Grand Tour Edition

Scene 1: Scrooge Meets Clarkson, the Ghost of Christmas Past

Scrooge’s bedroom. Ebenezer Scrooge, a grumpy miser, is woken by a deafening revving sound outside his window.

Scrooge: (groaning) What fresh hell is this?

Jeremy Clarkson bursts through the window in a cloud of exhaust smoke, holding a steering wheel like a sceptre.

Clarkson: (booming) Ebenezer Scrooge! I am the Ghost of Christmas Past, here to remind you of the glory days before… well, all this nonsense.

Scrooge: (coughing) What nonsense?

Clarkson: Everything! Speed limits! Electric cars! Vegan mince pies! We’re going back to a time when Christmas was proper. Follow me.

Clarkson drags Scrooge to a vintage car parked outside. It stalls immediately.

Clarkson: (kicking the wheel) Bloody thing! Never trust a car built after 1975.

Scrooge: (dryly) Inspiring start.

They finally get the car running and arrive at young Scrooge’s childhood. Instead of a touching memory, they crash into a school sports day where Scrooge is humiliated in a sack race.

Clarkson: (laughing) Look at you! Like a tortoise on its back. You’ve always been a bit rubbish, haven’t you?

Scrooge: (gritting his teeth) Is this supposed to teach me something?

Clarkson: Yes—life was better when people weren’t whinging about fairness. Now let’s move on before this car runs out of fuel.

Scene 2: Hammond, the Ghost of Christmas Present, Makes a Mess

Scrooge’s room again. This time, Richard Hammond bursts in wearing a too-big Santa suit, tripping over the hem and landing face-first on the floor.

Hammond: (cheerfully) Merry Christmas, Ebenezer! I’m the Ghost of Christmas Present! Ready to see what you’re missing out on?

Scrooge: (glaring) Not particularly.

Hammond pulls out a remote control and summons a souped-up sleigh outside the window. They hop on, but Hammond crashes it into a lamppost. Both emerge covered in snow.

Scrooge: (sarcastically) Excellent driving.

They arrive at the Cratchit household, where the family is enjoying a modest Christmas dinner.

Hammond: Look at them, Scrooge! Despite your stinginess, they’re making the best of it. Aren’t they inspiring?

Hammond accidentally steps on the turkey, flattening it.

Bob Cratchit: (horrified) My bird!

Hammond: (holding up a squashed leg) Uh… salvageable?

Scrooge rolls his eyes as Hammond attempts to explain the joys of Christmas, spilling mulled wine everywhere in the process.

Hammond: (grinning) The point is, they’re happy even though they’ve got nothing. Unlike you, grumpy guts.

Scrooge: (dryly) They had a turkey before you arrived.

Scene 3: May, the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come, Gets It All Wrong

The room is now eerily dark. James May materialises in a long black cloak, carrying a glowing gearstick like a staff. He stands silently for an uncomfortably long time.

Scrooge: (waving) Are you going to say something, or…?

May: (finally) No. It’s more effective if I don’t. Follow me.

May walks painfully slowly to a futuristic scene. They’re supposed to visit a grim, dystopian future, but May’s navigation leads them to an industrial estate instead.

Scrooge: (looking around) This is just a warehouse.

May: (checking a map) Oh. Right. Um, this way.

They eventually find a graveyard. May points to a tombstone dramatically. The name on it reads: “Ebenezer Strooge.”

Scrooge: (sighing) You misspelled my name.

May: (shrugging) Budget cuts.

May launches into a dry monologue about Scrooge’s wasted life, but his monotone delivery puts Scrooge to sleep.

Final Scene: Scrooge’s Redemption (Sort Of)

Back in his bedroom, Scrooge wakes up, more annoyed than enlightened.

Scrooge: (grumbling) I’ve been dragged through three lifetimes of nonsense, and for what?

He stomps to the butcher’s to buy a turkey for the Cratchits, but they’re sold out. Instead, he sends them a frozen pizza.

Later, Scrooge sits in front of the fire with the three ghosts. Clarkson and Hammond are arguing about who ruined the sleigh, while May sips tea quietly.

Scrooge: (mutters) Worst Christmas ever.

Clarkson: (ignoring him) What we’ve learned, Ebenezer, is that Christmas is about chaos, excess, and doing things your way. Which is basically how we live every day.

Hammond: (grinning) Exactly! Welcome to the club, Scrooge.

They all clink glasses as Scrooge sighs heavily.

The End. (Sort Of.)

This Grand Tour-style A Christmas Carol might not leave Scrooge a better man, but it would definitely leave audiences in hysterics.

There are many contenders for the title of the greatest living Briton. Politicians, scientists, artists, and athletes often come to mind. But for me, the answer is clear: Michael Palin. He may not have solved world hunger or landed on the moon, but he has done something equally remarkable—he has brought laughter, understanding, and a sense of adventure to millions of people around the world, all while embodying the very best of Britishness.

Through his unparalleled career, spanning comedy, travel, and humanitarian work, Michael Palin has become the ultimate national treasure. Here’s why.

The Comedy That Changed the World

Michael Palin’s legacy begins, of course, with Monty Python’s Flying Circus. In 1969, a group of Cambridge and Oxford graduates created a surreal, anarchic show that redefined comedy forever. Among them was Palin, who stood out not just for his comedic genius but for his range and charm.

Think of the greatest Python sketches—the Dead Parrot, The Lumberjack Song, or the Ministry of Silly Walks—and you’ll see Palin at the heart of them, delivering absurd lines with a sincerity that makes them timelessly funny. While John Cleese had the fire of indignation and Eric Idle the sharpness of wit, Palin brought warmth. He could play a bumbling shopkeeper, a hapless traveller, or a clueless bureaucrat, and each one felt uniquely, hilariously human.

But it wasn’t just Monty Python. Palin’s work outside the group, from his BAFTA-winning role in A Fish Called Wanda to his quieter, introspective writing, proves that his comedic brilliance was never limited to slapstick or satire. It’s comedy that doesn’t just make you laugh—it stays with you.

The Explorer Who Took Us Around the World

In the late 1980s, Michael Palin pivoted from comedy to travel, a move that could have been seen as risky. But instead of falling flat, it revealed an entirely new side to his talent. With Around the World in 80 Days (1989), Palin didn’t just recreate Jules Verne’s journey—he reinvented the travel documentary.

Unlike traditional travel hosts who presented cultures from a safe, academic distance, Palin immersed himself in every location. He showed us the quirks and beauty of the world with a sense of humour and humanity that made every encounter unforgettable. From the Arctic tundra to the Himalayan peaks, Palin approached every person and place with curiosity, respect, and a sense of wonder.

What made his travel shows unique was his willingness to show the imperfections of the journey. Whether he was stranded at a port or facing bad weather, Palin turned setbacks into stories, proving that travel isn’t just about destinations—it’s about the adventure.

The Gentleman We All Admire

It’s rare to find a public figure as universally beloved as Michael Palin. He is one of those rare celebrities who has remained untouched by scandal or cynicism, a feat that seems almost impossible in today’s world. His reputation as the “nicest man in Britain” isn’t just a title—it’s a testament to his humility, kindness, and genuine warmth.

Palin’s niceness isn’t performative. Whether he’s meeting fishermen in Norway, nomads in the Sahara, or fans at a book signing, he treats everyone with the same respect. There’s something quintessentially British about this quiet, self-deprecating approach to fame. While others shout their achievements from the rooftops, Palin simply gets on with the job, letting his work speak for itself.

The Renaissance Man

Michael Palin isn’t just a comedian and a traveller. He’s also a prolific writer, actor, and humanitarian. His novels and diaries offer insights into the mind of someone who has lived an extraordinary life but never lost his sense of gratitude. His charity work, particularly with causes like Parkinson’s research, shows his commitment to making the world a better place.

Even his knighthood in 2019, awarded for services to travel, culture, and geography, felt less like an honour and more like a long-overdue acknowledgment of his impact.

Why Palin Is the Greatest Living Briton

What makes Michael Palin truly exceptional is that he embodies the qualities we admire most in ourselves: wit, kindness, curiosity, and resilience. In a time when public figures often divide opinion, Palin unites us. He’s the sort of person you’d want to have a pint with, not because he’s famous, but because he genuinely seems like a good human being.

Through comedy, he made us laugh. Through travel, he showed us the world. Through his life, he’s shown us how to be decent. That’s why Michael Palin isn’t just a great Briton—he’s the greatest living Briton.
